English Proficiency Requirement
To be admitted to Eastern Washington University, you must meet a basic English proficiency requirement. There are three ways to meet the language requirement.
1. Take and pass a language exam
The most common language exams are the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
To meet the English proficiency requirement at EWU, you must earn one of the following scores.
English Proficiency Examination
TOEFL Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT)
TOEFL Paper Based
Visit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) website and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) website for more information about scheduling a language exam.
Official TOEFL/IELTS scores must come directly from the testing agency to Eastern Washington University. Do not send photocopies.
2. Pass a language course
Students may complete a college-level, transferable English composition course from a university or college in the United States with a grade of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in that course.
3. Study English at Eastern Washington University
If you cannot meet either the testing or language course requirement, conditional admission through the ELI program may be an option for you.
Applicants who attended primary and secondary schools taught in English are exempt from the English proficiency requirement. Submit an official letter from your school.
