Renowned Educator at EWU
Published: February 07, 2017
CHENEY, Wash. - Internationally renowned educator and researcher Joy DeGruy, PhD, will hold a special workshop at Eastern Washington University on topics of cultural sensitivity and diversity, as well as areas of mental and ecological resilience.
DeGruy's four-hour presentation, Culture-Specific Models of Service, Delivery and Practice, will be 1-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, in Hargreaves Hall (201) on the EWU campus. Her appearance is brought to you by EWU's Black Student Union (BSU).
During her 25 years in the field of social work, DeGruy has been lauded as a dynamic and inspirational speaker. Her strong voice is reflected in numerous published journal articles and she has also developed the "African American Male Adolescent Respect Scale," an assessment instrument designed to broaden our understanding of the challenges facing these youth in an effort to prevent their over-representation in the justice system.
In addition to her pioneering work in the explanatory theory and book, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, DeGruy has developed a culturally based education model for working with children and adults of color.
The workshop is open to the public for a fee and continuing education unit (CEU) credits will be offered to professionals who are interested.
