EWU Hosts Robotics Kickoff

Published: December 13, 2017

CHENEY, Washington - Eastern Washington University will host 100 high school students from around the region for the annual kickoff of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), 8-10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, in the lobby of EWU's Computing and Engineering Building.

This inspiring competition combines the excitement of sport with rigors of science and technology. It is part of an international program created by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), which aims to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM-related fields.

The kickoff marks the beginning of the FRC design and build phase, as participants will learn about the newest robotics challenge FIRST POWER UP and begin preparations for another exciting season.

Students and their adult mentors, making up about 12 different teams from the region, will receive a new Kit of Parts (KoP) at the kickoff event. Teams will then have six weeks to utilize the KoP components to design and build robots to meet this year's engineering challenge.

Teams will compete in their regions for a spot in the FRC Pacific Northwest District Championship April 3-7, 2018, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon. Winners will advance to the 2018 FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas and Detroit, Michigan later that month.
