Published: September 25, 2012

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University's new Learning Commons will open with a ribbon cutting ceremony at approximately 11:35 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28, on the main floor of JFK Library. EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo will introduce the new collaborative-learning area, immediately after a Board of Trustees meeting.

The Learning Commons will be a way for EWU to enhance academic support for all students at the university. The communal area will provide an interactive space where students can collaborate and find academic support professions from various departments. It will be accessible during all JFK Library hours.

"The Learning Commons will give students from different disciplines and fields of study the opportunity to enhance their skills and bolster their learning experience," said President Arevalo. "Students will be able to work together in ways they never could before on campus."

The commons combines traditional library research services with writing help, peer programs, computing and technology support, individual and group study and other services to support the learning process.

With the first phase completed, the Learning Commons will host the Multimedia Commons (formerly the MARS lab), the Writers' Center and PLUS group tutorial services. Future phases will see other services provided and groups added.

On Friday, The first 100 students to tour the new Learning Commons will receive a free USB thumb drive. The event will include refreshments and a tour.
