Sustainable building design integrates with the latest learning technologies

CHENEY, Wash. -  After being closed for nearly four years, Eastern Washington University's largest academic building, Patterson Hall, is open once again and will give generations of EWU students a first-class learning environment that will help them succeed at the highest level.

Located next to the Pence Union Building (PUB) in the heart of the EWU campus, the $57 million reconstruction project involved stripping the building to its foundation and adding office wings on three sides of the building. The modernization of the existing interior space will allow students and faculty to benefit from the fully equipped and enhanced classrooms, including two computer labs and a forensic lab. High-tech collaboration stations can also be accessed with laptops, notebooks or tablets for group study sessions. The improvements also include accommodations for students with special needs.

"With all the new amenities, the improved learning environment inside Patterson Hall will help promote student academic success," said EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo. "Thanks to the support of the EWU Board of Trustees and the continued capital funding provided by our state lawmakers, this project is the cornerstone of our campus master plan for the 21st century."

The building's sustainable building design is highlighted by a new glass facade that surrounds the 34,000 square feet added to the structure. The extra space includes abundant and comfortable lounge seating that will give students a place to study or visit between classes. Patterson's environmentally-friendly construction and landscaping will meet the minimum standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. The LEED program is sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, the nation's leading advocate of sustainable design.

Construction on Patterson began in April of 2010 and included the addition of the office wings. This first phase was completed in the summer of 2012. The second phase of work included buildout and modernization of the interior structure. The total space in Patterson is now more than 136,000 square feet.

The new state-of-the-art building has 44 classrooms and 180 workstations for faculty and staff, many from the College of Arts, Letters and Education and the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Social Work.
