Senate Honors Arévalo

Resolution recognizes work....Senate Resolution, President Arévalo

CHENEY, Wash. - The Washington State Senate has unanimously passed a resolution honoring Eastern Washington University President Rodolfo Arévalo, who is set to retire in July.

The resolution was sponsored in part by state senators whose districts encompass the university.

In part, the resolution cited President Arévalo's commitment to opportunity and underrepresented students, the school's record enrollment, academic success and facility enhancement during his time as president and the outstanding job he did in guiding Eastern through the state's recent financial crisis. The resolution also highlighted the success of Eastern's athletics teams and the iconic red turf at Roos Field, which was installed during Arévalo's presidency.

The Senate resolution also stated, "And whereas Dr. Arévalo's tenure as Eastern's president may be coming to an end, but his absolute dedication to higher education will continue to live on through the countless students he has inspired and those who have had the pleasure of working with him; Now therefore be it resolved, that the Washington State Senate recognize and congratulate Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo for his steadfast guidance of Eastern Washington University, his dedication to limitless student achievement, his unyielding commitment to diversity, his 40-plus years of dedication to shaping the minds of students worldwide, and most importantly his humility and humanity."

Sen. Michael Baumgartner of the 6th Legislative District in Spokane, who moved to adopt the resolution, called Arévalo a special leader, president and friend. "While his departure will leave a great void, I think his body of work as president leaves a great example of what we want both from our institutions of higher education and from its leaders."

"Having him as a constituent was great. Having his wife Nadine as a constituent was equally great. She was a spark plug for EWU," said Sen. Mark Schoesler of the 9th District. "The great ones don't have to tell you how great they are and what they've done. And that's Dr. Arévalo. In 22 years working around higher education, I've never known a more modest man."

President Arévalo, who was in the senate gallery, received a standing ovation after the resolution was approved.
