Statement on Immigration
Published: January 31, 2017
CHENEY, Washington - Eastern Washington University President Mary Cullinan has released the following statement supporting students in light of the recent executive order on immigration. Cullinan delivered her message during a rally on the EWU campus on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
Dear Campus Community:
This country is experiencing a time of great uncertainty and tension. The President's recent executive order regarding banning entry into the U.S. by citizens of certain countries has greatly increased those uncertainties and tensions. Many EWU faculty, staff, students, and alumni have communicated their deeply felt concerns.
I share those concerns. The executive order is disruptive to our students and employees. It does not reflect the mission and values of Eastern Washington University.
My pledge to you is that the campuses of this university will continue to focus every day to be places that are welcoming and safe-for all. That's what Eastern Washington University stands for. I pledge to you that all of us at EWU will continue to support social justice, equity, access, and opportunity. We will continue fostering an environment in which each student can study, work, and live safely.
Moreover, our university will continue to welcome and support students regardless of immigration status.
Also, EWU campus police do not partner with federal, state, or other local law enforcement agencies to enforce federal immigration law. The university is committed to the privacy of student records for all students, consistent with state and federal laws.
As I have written and spoken to our Eastern community several times over the past months, our values of inclusiveness, equity, and integrity-about being focused on students, about striving for excellence-are core to what we do at Eastern Washington University, to what we have done here for over a hundred years. We are YOUR public university.
Thank you for supporting our incredibly important work together.
