PUB Contract Awarded

Published: October 03, 2016

CHENEY, Wash. - The long-awaited renovation of Eastern Washington University's Pence Union Building (PUB) is now set to begin in earnest after the EWU Board of Trustees (BOT) approved a $30 million construction contract on Sept. 30.

The BOT unanimously voted to award the renovation contract to Leone & Keeble, Inc., which submitted the lowest bid. The Spokane general contractor has also completed other big projects on the Eastern campus, including the renovation of Patterson Hall and the construction of snyamncut, the new residence hall.

The remodel will create an open and inviting student center that will be the hub for student life. The project is expected to promote student engagement and improve retention by increasing student lounge, study and collaboration space. There will also be improved space for student leadership, clubs and organizations. Student dining space will also be enhanced and complement additional dining options, including retail dining choices. The PUB will be transformed into an environmentally-friendly building with improved natural lighting and highly visible indoor/outdoor student activities.

The PUB renovation will be financed with 30-year revenue bonds, to be paid by a mandatory student service and activity fee. Total construction cost will be $30,241,000. The project will be complete by the spring of 2018.
