Student Bowl Success

Published: June 06, 2017

CHENEY, Washington - Facing limited time to answer each Jeopardy-style question, this team of exercise science students from a regional comprehensive in Cheney, Washington, used hard work and smarts to place 5th in a national quiz bowl for college students.

Who is Eastern Washington University's Red Team? Coorect!

EWU's team placed 5th out of 12 teams in the Student Bowl at the annual American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) meeting in Denver, Colorado, May 30-June 3. The Student Bowl involves questions in sports medicine and exercise science (clinical exercise physiology, metabolism, strength training, EKG, etc.). Teams have just 15 seconds to answer a question.

The EWU team earned the right to compete at the national level and represent the Northwest ACSM Chapter after winning the regional competition for the first time in February.

Team members included students Emily Dunston, Shelby Chriest and Johanna Sherman - all members of the EWU Exercise Science Club. They were supported by their EWU faculty advisor Annika Vahk and Assistant Professor of Exercise Science Katie Taylor, who prepped the students by hosting mini Jeopardy competitions.
