Ariel McMillanCHENEY, Washington - Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has appointed Eastern Washington University senior Ariel McMillan as the student representative to the EWU Board of Trustees (BOT).

Her term is effective July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2017.

The Ronald E. McNair Scholar will earn her BA in Communication Studies from EWU this June, and she will continue her education this fall in Eastern's Master of Science in Communications program.

A graduate of East Valley High School in the Spokane Valley, McMillan says she has always had a passion for higher education and looks forward to serving underrepresented students while promoting diversity and inclusion on campus.

"My goal of being a part of this governing board is to provide a good ear for all students and to foster communication efforts by the school to improve student success," says McMillan.

In addition to presenting research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), McMillan has also served as a keynote speaker and participated in many campus forums on racism and diversity issues at Eastern.

McMillan succeeds Mariana Garcia as the student trustee.

EWU's Board of Trustees is the university's governing body appointed by the governor. The board works with EWU President Mary Cullinan to set the strategic direction of the university and helps to ensure that EWU is academically and financially accountable and successful.
