Students Help Veterans

Published: February 15, 2018

SPOKANE, Washington - Students from Eastern Washington University's Dental Hygiene Program as well as those from other departments within the College of Health Science & Public Health are joining forces to once again provide health care services for military veterans this month.

The annual Smiles for Veterans event will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, at EWU Spokane's dental hygiene clinic, 310 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

During the outreach day, dental hygiene students will volunteer their talents to provide various dental services for only $15 (which includes parking). Those services include cleanings, X-rays, dental exams/assessments and preventive fluoride varnish treatment.

Students from the EWU Departments of Communication and Science Disorders, Occupational Therapy, and WSU Speech and Hearing Sciences will also offer up their skills. They will provide screenings related to hearing loss and sleep problems.

Health education, referrals and follow up treatment will be scheduled as necessary.

Last year, the event provided over $26,000 in dental services through volunteers and in-kind donations.

Smiles for Veterans is part of an annual community service project for EWU students.
