The Honors Program at Eastern Washington University offers unique curriculum for freshmen, transfer students, and upper-division students.

Freshman Sequence:

The Honors first-year sequence satisfies 6 of the General Education Core Requirements (GECR) all students must meet to earn a degree. Honors freshmen take one 8-credit course per quarter.

HONS 101/Fall Quarter
Ancient World - (satisfies 1 Humanities GECR & 1 Social Science GECR)

HONS 102/Winter Quarter
Middle Ages through the Reformation - (satisfies 1 Humanities GECR & 1 Social Science GECR)

HONS 103/Spring Quarter
Modern Science & Society w/ HONS 104 lab - (satisfies 1 Natural Science GECR & 1 Social Science GECR)

These courses stress both composition and discussion. The interdisciplinary format provides a foundation in the liberal arts --drama, fine art, music, history, science, philosophy, and world literature. Freshman Honors enhances solid critical thinking and composition skills during a student's first year. Students develop the ability to produce quality compositions, as well as to correctly cite works consulted. Honors faculty work one-on-one with students, if needed, to foster English composition skills.

Honors classes are set at a comfortable level and pace; the program has proven to be both valuable and enjoyable for more than 20 years.

To Qualify, Freshmen must meet the following requirements:

  • 3.6 high school cumulative grade point average
  • superior SAT scores AND/OR
  • 26+ ACT comprehensive score
  • Exceptions may be made for special circumstances and talents.

A few highlights:

  • Honors student community projects, such as Habitat for Humanity
  • Special Honors freshman advising and priority registration privileges
  • Faculty who provide personal attention with emphasis on student success
  • Leadership, mentoring, & social opportunities; such as plays, short hikes, etc.
  • Optional Spring Break Trip

To Apply: Complete the Honors section of the Eastern Washington University General Scholarship Application. Running Start students with an AA do not apply to Freshman Honors. If you have some Running Start credits, but not an AA, contact our office.

Departmental Honors:

Students not admitted to University Honors upon initial enrollment, as well as those students who were, may earn a Departmental Honors Designation (Ad Majorem) at graduation by following these guidelines. Students must have at least a 3.3 college GPA and be willing to do some extra work. To earn Departmental Honors, students must:

  • Enrich three upper-division courses required for their major--do additional work in each course as mutually agreed to by the professor & student. The course must be at 300 or above and,
  • Complete two upper-division Honors courses. Many of these cross-listed courses satisfy graduation requirements in Cultural and Gender Diversity or International Studies. The list of cross-listed courses can be found here. Also, see list with Cultural Diversity and International Studies courses in the EWU Catalog.

Steps to earning a Departmental Honors designation:

At the beginning of the quarter the student negotiates a Departmental Honors proposal (enrichment) with the professor --e.g. additional research and writing, a creative project, additional reading, etc. Although not required, this could also be an oral presentation.

It is the student's responsibility to obtain a Departmental Honors Form from the Honors office or online, have the professor sign it at the end of the course, and return it to Honors with an attached description of the extra work completed. No final course grade below 3.3 will be accepted for Honors credit.

Departmental Honors provides involvement opportunities, benefits, and challenges--especially for students planning for graduate or professional school. We encourage students to phone, email, or visit Honors with questions about Departmental Honors at Eastern.

Transfer Honors:
