The EWU Ronald E. McNair Scholar program is funded to increase the attainment of PhD degrees by students that are of lower socioeconomic class, first-generation or underrepresented segments of society. Students who are accepted and become McNair scholars are expected to be active participants until graduation and acceptance to graduate school.

Application Process

  1. Check your eligibility: You may be eligible, if you: Are currently enrolled at Eastern, have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA in major field, are a United States citizen or permanent resident, first-generation in college, low-income, or from a group underrepresented in doctoral studies including African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics.
  2. Register for the McNair orientation using the orientation form. The fall 2016 orientation will be October 12, 2017 at 12:00 pm or 2:00 pm (you only need to attend one session) in Monroe Hall 109.

  4. Interview three faculty and write a three-page reflection of the interview. The director provides you with a faculty interview guide to help you develop interview questions. The reason for this interview is to help you get to know professors better, to build relationships, and to learn from faculty about their experiences earning a PhD and working in academia. This interviews should be done within office hours of the professors and before the application deadline.
  5. Schedule a meeting with a McNair staff to discuss commitment of earning a PhD. For this meeting, bring the following items: 1) unofficial transcripts from all schools you have attended (Eastern, other universities, and community colleges), 2) interview reflection, and 3) academic plan. After meeting with the program director, you will receive the McNair Application Packet.
  6. Complete the McNair Application Packet by established deadline.  The McNair Application Packet includes a 1) personal statement, 2) two letters of recommendation from PhD professors, a 3) Recruitment Intake Student Survey, and a 4) research proposal. For the research proposal, we are asking applicants to think about a potential research project worth exploring and a potential faculty mentor. Once accepted, we expect this project to expand and change over time.
  7. Meet with the Writers' Center at least once to discuss their application material. Applicants should meet with a Responder to discuss their interview reflection, research proposal, and/or personal statement. Please make sure to ask the Writers' Center for confirmation of your visit and send it to the director of the program.
  8. Submit your McNair Application Packet by the established deadline.
