McNair Research Title: Portrayals of Latina/os in News Media During the Trump Phenomenon

McNair Research Abstract: The credibility of the media has been attacked and denigrated within the years leading up and including the Trump phenomenon.  Under the Trump administration, Latinos in the U.S. have been the center of some of the most hostile rhetoric being thrown around as a direct resultof the 2016 elections.  Studies of news media have shown they perpetuate inaccurate representations of the Latino population (Dixon & Williams, 2015). The purpose of this researchis to assess the recent media coverage regarding Latinos in the United States in the context of the Trump phenomenon.  Empirical evidence from a survey conducted in various states is used toassess the impact of these portrayals among its residents.  Finally, a content analysis of news outlets including FOX, MSNBC, Breitbart, and Huffington Post are used to qualify the extent ofthis coverage resulting from the rhetoric being pushed by the Trump administration.
