Michelle Abunaja

McNair Scholar Michelle

Michelle Abunaja is a senior majoring in Urban and Regional Planning with minors in Spanish and Geography. She is interested in multimodal transportation and the effects of the built environment on community health. She has experience in urban planning and public health. As an intern at Varela and Associates Engineering, Michelle wrote the ADA Transition Plan for the City of Othello last summer and plans to compose a Walkability report for the City of Coulee Dam in the fall. In addition, Michelle works with Spokane Regional Health District to implement the Walk, Bike, Bus program in the City of Millwood, Washington. She is also a Peer Health Educator for EWU Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services where she aids in developing programs to teach EWU students on a range of health topics. Under the guidance of Associate Professor and Director Dr. K. Brooks, she will be conducting research street trees contribution to air pollution mitigation and its effect on walkability in the U-District of Spokane, Washington. Her goals include implementing multimodal transportation projects and designs to improve active living and air quality for community members and teach the next generation of planners to be consciousness of the built environments impact on public health.
