On December 13, 2019, the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) “Fighting Eagles” battalion conducted its Fall Commissioning Ceremony. The ceremony was held in the historic Showalter Hall auditorium on the beautiful EWU campus.  The path to this day was not an easy one for the commissioned. All the Cadets conducted up to 4 years of military training in the ROTC program, had to meet rigorous academic requirements, build strong physical fitness, pass the 37-day long ROTC Advanced Camp at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, among a host of other challenging requirements before they could commission as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in the U.S. Army.

Wednesday, Mar. 6: The Face of Migrant Labor in Washington State

This photo exhibit and presentation give a glimpse of the ethical, moral and legal decadence our country is willing to endure for the sake of cheap fruits and vegetables and large profit margins for shareholders and corporate owners. Presently, the working and living conditions of migrant camps in the U.S. have improved little; more importantly, to what extent do we continue to exploit child labor (as revealed in these photographs) for the sake of getting inexpensive fruits and vegetables that are part of our daily diets.

Martin Meraz-Garcia, PhD
CEP/CAMP Interim Director
Tawanka 215 A/B/C
Presentation: 2:30-3 p.m.
Exhibit: 1-4 p.m.

Thursday, Mar. 7: Knowledge in the Crop

Informative facts regarding Washington crops and agricultural workers will be distributed at large around the EWU campus community. These facts will be included on apples that were picked by some of our very own EWU/CAMP students in the Royal City area.

Friday, Mar. 8: Fruits of the Harvest

CAMP students will be distributing notes of appreciation to faculty/staff from their hometowns and EWU campus who have made an educational impact in their lives.

What is CAMP?

The College Assistance Migrant Program, referred to as CAMP, is a federally-funded program designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farmworker backgrounds during their first year in college. The program provides students with both financial assistance and support services, with the goal of preparing them to continue their education at a four-year college or university.

Migrant Farmworker

A migrant farmworker is a seasonal farmworker whose employment requires travel that keeps the worker from returning to a permanent home within the same day.

For access accommodations, call 509.359.6899.
