Tyler is just the kind of
exceptional student this award is set up to recognize.

Tyler Angell was already on the ground “running” via Running Start when I met him
as a new full-time student in fall 2023. His enthusiasm for all the ways he planned to
maximize his time at EWU was contagious. As a self-identified white, cisgender male
he expressed a desire to take courses in all the diversity programs to learn as much as
he could from these intersectional fields and find ways to advocate for social justice. He
is majoring in GWSS and wants to minor in as many diversity programs as he can.
And, unlike many students who have their enthusiasm depleted over the course of their
first year, Tyler’s has only grown.

One of the characteristics that sets Tyler apart is his leadership through generosity and
commitment to community building. I have had many students share examples with
me and have witnessed this myself. One student told me that Tyler gave them $170 out
of his own pocket when the student was facing eviction. He then helped that student
find resources to navigate his houselessness. Tyler is always showing up to support
other students’ projects. In just the last week, I’ve seen him at multiple presentations
during the Student Research & Creative Works Symposium and at an art student
demonstration on the campus mall.

When I told Tyler GWSS wanted to nominate him for the Chertok scholarship, he was
thrilled and appreciative. Then, in the very next paragraph, he suggested we also
nominate one of his peers because he is “continuously blown away by her work” and he
felt she is “well deserving of the award.” I have never had a student award nominee
suggest other students who would obviously be their competition. I’ve witnessed Tyler
offer similar praise and thoughtful appreciation of his classmates during class
discussions.

Addressing Tyler’s academic acuity, Dr. Mimi Marinucci shared the following: “Tyler is
a thoughtful student who is willing to ask difficult questions. He grasps theoretical
subtleties that are easy to overlook or ignore.” I experienced a beautiful expression of
this a few weeks ago. A local artist was addressing our class about how art has long
been integral to activism. She had us listen to Nina Simone’s rendition of her song
“Strange Fruit.” For many students, including Tyler, it was the first time they had
heard that powerful song and they were visibly moved. After a period of silence, Tyler
offered that, listening to Simone hold some notes for so long, he found himself holding
his breath, waiting for release. He said he felt that was Simone expressing how she was
waiting for release from the horror [of lynching], asking “when is it going to end?”

Dr. Jessi Willis also has the highest praise for Tyler’s scholar-activism: Tyler
is an exceptionally insightful and inquisitive student. His coursework
consistently exceeds expectations and reflects deep, critical thinking. Tyler is
innovative in the applications of social justice scholarship that attends to persistent
marginalized structural inequalities. For example, in the GWSS101 course, Tyler
took on scholarly examination of issues related to MMIW. His presentation on this
topic not only extended community learning on a vital intersectional feminist issue.
It demonstrated how voices situated with privilege must be used to disrupt
systemic practices of violence.
Tyler is not afraid to take on difficult topics. He consistently demonstrates
characteristics of a lifelong learner. His investment in addressing issues of
diversity, inclusion, and marginalization indicate a commitment to socially-lived
theorizing.
After only two quarters as a GWSS major, Tyler took on the leadership role of
reestablishing Generation Action, the student action group addressing issues of
bodily autonomy and reproductive justice. Again, this example highlights the Tyler’s
commitment to directly engage with contemporary issues vital to this moment and
specifically impacting our most vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Along with GWSS’s endorsement of Tyler, Dr. Gloria Baynes (Africana Studies), Dr.
Max Hohner (English), and Kim Davis (Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) all
offered to write letters of support on very short notice. These letters speak to the
breadth of Tyler’s impact across departments/program and campus units. The letters
are included with this nomination. Also included are Tyler’s resume and an example of
his intersectional scholar-activism, a tabling flyer he created for a reproductive justice
tabling event.

Tyler offered this statement about this work revitalizing the Planned Parenthood
student organization: I want to create an organization and community that expands people’s
social and political networks, that creates for others the sense of empowerment and
belonging that I’ve found in the GWSS department. I’ve learned from my studies that we are
much more powerful together than we are alone, and collective grassroots action
for social justice and healing is my ultimate goal – Planned Parenthood Generation
Action is my current vehicle for that dream.

This kind of self-reflection and dedication is exceptional, and reflective of the
characteristics Jeffers Chertok modeled for students and the larger community. Tyler is
without question an exceptional feminist scholar-activist. He is already using his
education to benefit and teach in his wider peer learning community. We could not
more strongly recommend Tyler Angell for this award.

Thank you,

Dr. Judy Rohrer
Director
Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies

https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-150x150.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-225x300.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-768x1024.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-768x1024.jpeg
1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-1152x1536.jpeg","1536x1536-width":1152,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-1536x2048.jpeg","2048x2048-width":1536,"2048x2048-height":2048
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_HIST-Thomas-Bell-Photo-scaled.jpeg

I am extremely pleased to nominate Thomas Bell, a Junior double-majoring in
History and Political Science, for the Jeffers Chertok Memorial Scholarship.

Thomas declared his majors as an incoming transfer student from Spokane Falls
Community College in the Fall of this academic year. In his first two quarters at EWU, he
has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and has become deeply interested in Disability history,
History of Gender, and the History of Political thought. Thomas is a non-traditional student
and is also disabled. While managing his physical challenges, Thomas has distinguished
himself as a responsible, intellectually-engaged student. He
was also a very active participant, never failing to have an answer or comment that plunged
the rest of the class into discussion. I
cannot think of a more deserving individual from our majors, and the members of the School of Psychology
are in agreement. Although I do not often get to teach, I had the pleasure of having Evan in my Psychology
and the Legal System course, which coincidentally I developed with the support of Dean Chertok when I
first came to EWU to serve both Psychology and Criminal Justice majors. I was impressed with Evan’s
academic performance from the start. Evan shows a true passion for learning and investigation. He was
clearly engaged in the content and would often reach out individually to learn more. This is the most difficult
course that I teach, and he performed amazingly. Evan has clearly demonstrated that determination in other
courses as well, currently boasting a 4.0 GPA at EWU. Dr. Jillene Seiver provided her support for this
nomination indicating that “Evan is engaged and enthusiastic about learning. In class, he asks questions
and interacts frequently with classmates. In an effort to truly understand course material, he frequently visits
instructors during office hours.”

Evan’s efforts have not been limited to the classroom. Evan routinely attends campus events and
contributes to the community. He attended our Homecoming Celebration Open House and interacted with
alumni and faculty and other students. He has a regular presence on campus and works to engage peers.
When asked to assist with the Psychology table at the recent Newly Admitted Students event, Evan
immediately agreed. After receiving training on the demonstrations, he took the lead in engaging potential
students and their families in the demonstrations and explaining what it means to be a psychology student
in our School of Psychology. The School’s secretary, who also supported the table, reported that Evan was
very popular with the attendees, and that he provided leadership for his student colleagues. For the past
few months, he has been involved in processing data for a study with Dr. Seiver. As a result of that work,
Evan presented some of the study’s results to the EWU Creative Works Symposium here in Cheney and
will be presenting his work at the EWU-Bellevue College Psychology Student Research Conference this
coming week. In addition, this work has led Evan to propose his own research study, which will be
conducted during his senior year. He will start internship this summer.

Evan is a bright individual and strong student. He is the kind of student that a faculty member dreams of
having in their courses and on their research teams. I often joke with Dr. Seiver that I would like to convince
Evan to switch to my research lab. Evan has aspirations of going on to serve as a mental health clinician
and I have no doubt he will represent EWU and the field well. He wiill be a great resource for all those he
works with. Evan demonstrates a true passion for learning and helping others, and his enthusiasm is
contagious. Please strongly consider Evan for the Jeffers Chertok Memorial Scholarship and do not hesitate
to contact me if I can provide any further information.

Sincerely,

Kayleen Islam-Zwart, Ph.D.
Chair of Psychology, Psychology at BC Director, and Professor

Faculty Nomination: Drs. Chertok Memorial Scholarship.

Jasmine is currently a Junior and serves as the Treasurer of our EWU PRSSA (Public Relations
Student Society of America) student organization. In this role, Jasmine has taken on an
exceptional leadership role organizing professional development opportunities and events.
Jasmine’s leadership in organizing events for students began when she helped start up a student
equity cub that aimed to diversify education and bring awareness to diverse cultures while
attending Richland High School. Now in her role as a student at EWU, Jasmine recently took the
lead on organizing EWU PRSSA’s annual “Pro-Tour” where she helped organize a full day of in-
person visits at organizations including KHQ, STCU Credit Union and Maker + Made. She also
helped organize a virtual “Pro-Tour” to ensure online students were included in the valuable
networking event and secured interactive conversations for students with top employers
including Mattel (Barbie) and Disney. In the fall, Jasmine and the other members of the
executive board organized a registration and advising event with the faculty in the Department of
Communication Studies to help educate students about the advising and registration process and
encourage regular and ongoing communication between students and their faculty advisors. The
event was well-received by students and went so well PRSSA decided to offer additional
advising sessions in winter and spring quarters.

Jasmine is a leader both in and outside of the classroom. In terms of academic ability and
performance, we would place Jasmine in the top 10% of all students in our program. Jasmine’s
transcript shows that she is maintaining a 3.87 GPA. In the classroom, Jasmine is known for
pushing herself and her peers to take initiative and go the extra mile. For the past three years,
Jasmine has also encouraged and inspired high school students in the volunteer work she does
with the Richland High School Goldrush Dance Team, serving as a team mentor and guide.

In addition to going to school full-time and serving in a leadership role on the PRSSA executive
board, Jasmine also works for Eastern Washington University’s Event Planning Office. In this
role, Jasmine has helped plan, approve and schedule a variety of events for Eastern Washington
University students, faculty and staff including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week. Jasmine
often talks about the importance of creating community for students and how her role in event
planning helps bring the campus community together through special events.

Jasmine is an inspiration to her peers and colleagues and is very deserving of the prestigious
Jeffers R. Chertok Memorial Scholarship. Thank you for your consideration of Jasmine and her
contributions.

Sincerely,

Jessica Boyer Peter Shields, PhD
Senior Lecturer, Public Relations Professor, Communication

"1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2019/05/AIS-eaglebeads-1536x1024.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2019/05/AIS-eaglebeads.jpg","2048x2048-width":1600,"2048x2048-height":1067

As Chair of the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice, I am delighted to recommend Liezel John for the
Jeffers Chertok Memorial Scholarship at the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS).

Liezel has shown dedication to her studies, as evidenced by her impressive GPA of 3.53. Professor James Rosenzweig, who worked with Mr. Riggle in his SOST
390: Social Studies Methods course expressed that Jeremiah “is tremendously gifted in group
discussions; his insights are certainly well-reasoned and grounded in assigned readings, but he
truly shines when it comes to synthesizing the comments of others and crediting them for how
their words have inspired him.” Moreover, Professor Rosenzweig explained that “Jeremiah has
done more to contribute to a positive and thoughtful classroom climate than any other student in
my class…He creates spaces where everyone feels more welcome and comfortable, and where
people know that when they use their voice, they’ll receive positive recognition for it. Dr.
Chertok is often remembered for his generosity and his genuine care; I can’t think of any student
I’ve taught at Eastern who exhibits those two qualities more sincerely than Jeremiah Riggle.”

Dr. Michael Conlin also offered his support of Mr. Riggle’s nomination for the Jeffers
Chertok Memorial Scholarship, noting that “Jeremiah was an exceptional student” in his
HIST 477: Anglo-American Constitutional History “who consistently provided thoughtful
and well researched contributions to the class discussions and debates.” Dr. Conlin
expressed that Mr. Riggle “is extremely deserving of recognition for his work and for his
outstanding character.” Furthermore, these sentiments have been echoed by other History
faculty members over the past two years as Mr. Riggle’s commitment to continuing his
education has led him to develop strong connections with his professors.

In addition to serving as Mr. Riggle advisor, I currently have the distinct pleasure of working
with Jeremiah in the research-intensive course HIST 444: History of the Pacific Northwest where
he is investigating the temperance and anti-saloon movements in Spokane County during the late
nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Mr. Riggle is examining both the social dynamics of
these movements as well as the intersectionality of gender, class, and politics within these
specific spaces and place. His ability to effectively synthesize evidence from numerous sources
is unmatched by his peers, but more importantly, he continuously readjusts his research question
to further understand nuance reasonings and explanations. Mr. Riggle demonstrates a great talent
for recognizing that life experiences are complicated and require time to process as well as
empathy to fully understand. His future students will greatly benefit from this insight and his
professional guidance.

Few students present themselves as a natural teacher and even less reflect a genuine respect for
public service, but Mr. Riggle embodies both qualities in his roles as a student and as a
community member. In addition to coaching youth sports, for the last five years Jeremiah has
given his limited time to referee for the Spokane Basketball Association. Mr. Riggle has
expressed how this volunteer work informs his identity as community member, noting that
“Through my roles as a referee and coach, I have learned the importance of fairness, teamwork,
and leadership. These values have helped me become a better student, mentor, and community
member. I am committed to continuing my journey toward success and positively impacting
those around me.”

While this is Mr. Riggle’s fourth year at EWU, at 33 years of age Jeremiah has been on a much
longer journey than most undergraduate students – demonstrating outstanding resilience and a
commitment not only to his own education but that of his future students. Mr. Riggle is on-track
to graduate with a BAE in Social Studies Secondary Education in Spring 2025 and his
exceptional dedication to his goal of becoming a teacher deserves to be recognized. When asked
about his future career, Riggle stated, “My goal is to remain committed to the concepts of
harmony and inclusiveness. My story of attending school later in life while raising two kids
exemplifies how education is attainable for anyone, regardless of background, race, gender, or
sexual identity.”

Considering all the factors described above, I (in addition to Dr. Conlin and Professor
Rosenzweig) highly recommend you grant Jeremiah Riggle a Jeffers Chertok Memorial
scholarship. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to discuss Mr. Riggle’s merits
further.

Jacki Hedlund Tyler, Director of Social Studies Education

"1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2019/05/AIS-eaglebeads-1536x1024.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2019/05/AIS-eaglebeads.jpg","2048x2048-width":1600,"2048x2048-height":1067

The Anthropology faculty is pleased to nominate Devon Wilson for the Jeffers
Chertok Memorial Scholarship. This is, of course, demonstrated by her very high grade point average, but grades don’t even begin to tell the whole story in Kiera’s case. She also contributes enormously to the intellectual vitality of the classroom and, by extension, to the Political Science department as a whole. Her comments during class discussions not only reveal an uncommon intellectual sophistication but also enliven the classroom environment and elevate the intellectual experience for the rest of us. She is an incisive reader of even the most complicated texts and has never shied away from the challenge of difficult work. Indeed, she often seeks out such challenges. Her research and writing skills are of the highest quality and reflect a nuanced understanding of source material which she then uses to advance plausible and persuasive arguments. In addition, Kiera has been a leader in the Spokane community. She volunteered for Lisa Brown’s successful Spokane mayoral campaign in the fall of 2023 and succeeded in persuading many of her fellow students to do so as well. Kiera is now an employee of Dr. Bernadine Bank’s campaign for Washington’s 5th Congressional district seat. To no one’s surprise, Kiera continues to shine in this role as well. Finally, Kiera finds a way to balance these activities with other jobs outside of school and social time with her innumerable friends—and somehow makes it all look easy! The opportunity to work for Sherwin-Williams helped him grow his understanding of the corporate-retail world. In summer of 2023, he had the unique opportunity to intern at O’Sullivan Properties in Kirkland as an assistant Property Manager. Her enthusiasm, brilliance, and earnestness command the attention of any room. This year, as a reader for Willow Springs magazine, she’s gotten the attention of our graduate students. Mya will be entering our graduate program in the fall, and already graduate students and editors from both of our publishing practicums are encouraging her to apply for the paid GSA managing editor positions; they can tell what a force she is—how smart she is, what organizational skills she brings to the table and how much work she’s capable of putting into any task. In workshops, she turns in twice as much creative work as any other student, always freshly written and mostly a head above the quality generally seen in workshops, both in fiction and poetry. She writes all the time and is eager for any opportunity for feedback. She always generous and articulate about everyone else’s work, which she gives a more careful read than most do. In addition to the high quality of his coursework and his impressive GPA that mark Kohl as one of our outstanding seniors, he has a long and successful track record of community service and independent scholarly research and inquiry that make him an ideal candidate for the Chertok.

Both in volunteer and paid positions since 2019, Kohl has devoted his time to serving those who will benefit from his effort most: he was a counselor and mentor for the Pediatric Cancer Camp and founder and project coordinator for Love 4 Spokane, supporting Spokane’s unhoused population. At Eastern, he served as a LGBTQ+ residential advisor, fostering identity-focused programming and mental health awareness for his fellow students.

More recently, Kohl served as a Legislative Intern at the Washington State legislature, developing professional relationships with two state elected officials. Kohl’s focus during the internship, bioethics and wellness for marginalized populations, is what also led him to spend time in Spain in 2024 at the Fundació Privada Enllaç, where he studied the Spanish system of health care and its work supporting members of the LBGTQ+ community there. Now, Kohl wants to bring those insights to a career in law and public policy.

For all these reasons, as well as his cheerful, Bergsonian élan and his thoughtful leadership among Eastern’s philosophy majors, Philosophy would like to see Kohl S. She is a tireless worker, a talented artist, and an impeccable craftsperson. She continually demonstrates her passion and strong commitment to developing her ceramic art practice. She not only spends the necessary time honing her craft, but also shares her skills, knowledge, and passion with others through teaching ceramic workshops and classes in our regional community. She seeks out and embraces these opportunities to work with and learn from others at all levels of ceramic skill, including youth and adult learners. Her thesis research on glazes and ceramic surfaces is extraordinary. She embraces the laborious process of material research, mixing and testing new formulations in order to make her exuberant and colorful vision a reality. He has been a valued and trusted member or section leader of the Concert Jazz Orchestra, Repertory Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Code Red, Collegians Vocal Jazz, Jazz Combos, Pop Combos and Marching Band. Professors always know they can depend on Skylar to coordinate a touring list, or get the requisite driver training to drive the percussion ensemble to an event off campus! His peers seek him out to play in various groups, including off campus gigs as his demeanor is welcoming, his enthusiasm is infectious, and his musical insights and abilities are appreciated – everyone always feels better around Skyler. Even without knowing, Skyler inspires the musicians around him to play and engage more artistically. When Skyler is behind the drum set, or standing at a marimba everyone knows its going to be a great time! His work has always been of the highest quality, and his ability to synthesize information and musical content is remarkable. His work in his education placement and student teaching have made him a sought-after candidate even before his graduation. He has a desire to teach elementary music, and oh how those students will be lucky to have Skyler as their teacher. Most importantly, however, is how he has inspired and motivated his fellow students. We recognize that Skyler is the model for success evidenced by his academic achievements every performance throughout his residency here. We will remember his smile from the stage in every concert and know that he will make a difference in the world through his talents, passion for teaching and artistic acumen.

https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-150x150.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-300x240.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-768x614.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-1024x819.jpeg
1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-1536x1229.jpeg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1229,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-2048x1638.jpeg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1638
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-scaled.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/FPA_THTR-Jakob-Duncan-Photo-scaled.jpeg

As the Director of Theatre at Eastern Washington University, I have had the distinct pleasure of directing Jakob Duncan in 26 Pebbles performing with him in Julius Caesar and witnessing his extraordinary work in several other productions at EWU Theatre and in the Inland Northwest Theatre Arts community. First, as a student in History of Spain, she produced a rollicking account of Juan de Fuca’s exploration of the Pacific Northwest coast on behalf of Spain. Now, in my History of Mexico course, she is delving deep into the story of the soldaderas – Mexican women who at various times have been combatants in the wars of that country. She was so helpful to the students that her cooperating teacher at Yasuhara asked for “many more practicum students just like Emily.”

https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611-150x150.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611-234x300.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611-768x985.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611-799x1024.png
1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611-1198x1536.png","1536x1536-width":1198,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-945x2048.png","2048x2048-width":945,"2048x2048-height":2048
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611.png
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/HAMLL_SSE-Brookelyn-Syme-Photo-e1722023705611.png

Over the past decade, Brookelyn Syme has demonstrated what superb dedication to reaching your
goals can produce as well as who it can inspire. As a non-traditional student, Richard embodies the experiences of many EWU students, but his story is no less impressive because of it. Richard is a first-generation college student. He started at EWU after working during the time that his wife earned her college degree. With four children, the couple have their hands full, but Richard has found the time while at EWU to do the following: earn a Bachelor of Arts with a double major: one in Political Science, the other in International Affairs. And he also earned a separate Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. Yes, that is correct: he has earned two degrees, and one of those includes a double major. He also earned a perfect 4.0 grade point while doing this. Richard has also been the President of the International Affairs Council, a student group on campus, and in that role has helped organize, speak at, and/or manage several Teach-Ins with the International Affairs program over the past several years. His leadership has helped the campus stay informed about such important world events as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war in Ukraine, and the war in Gaza.

Richard has a bright future ahead of him: he has been accepted to the Ph.D. program in Political Science at the University of Hawaii. Abigail Zimmerman attended my first course here at EWU. I was amazed at her level of class and material involvement. Ms. Zimmerman was attentive and was always prepared for class. She asked many questions and assimilated the provided information to the point of being able to critically think about the material and its’ application in real life scenario’s. I was pleased that Ms. Zimmerman attended at least one of my classes each quarter since that time. In every class, she has shown the same level of dedication and competency that faculty in all areas of the University hope their students strive to attain.

Ms. Zimmerman is much more than just a student. Despite wanting to become a Forensic Investigator, she also has a heart for theatre and dance which has translated into her double majoring in Criminal Justice and Theatre. She has volunteered for several theatre productions at both EWU’s Foxgloves and elsewhere. She maintains a significant GPA while volunteering, but she also works with Spokane Gymnastics 3 to 4 times a week. In short, Ms. Zimmerman is enthusiastic about life and school. She typically is scholastically at the top of each of the classes that I have been able to observe. I am confident that Ms. Zimmerman deserves not just this nomination, but is also deserving of being the recipient of the award.

https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-150x150.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-300x200.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-768x512.jpeg
https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-1024x683.jpeg
1536x1536":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-1536x1024.jpeg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://www.ewu.edu/cahss/wp-content/uploads/sites/25/2024/07/SOCI-Gabrielle-Mason-Photo-2048x1365.jpeg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":1365

It has been a pleasure to work with Gabby in multiple Sociology courses this year. She is undoubtedly one of the most diligent and thoughtful students that I have taught during my 21 years at EWU. Her writing is especially impressive: all of her discussion responses are meticulous and articulate, while the form and content of her essays are always excellent.

I particularly enjoyed her essay for Contemporary Sociological Theory, in which she uses Simone de Beauvoir’s concepts to make sense of the life story portrayed in the film Moonlight. She writes: “Within Beauvoir’s existentialism there is the discussion of freedom, responsibility, and authenticity.
