Please review the audition requirements for each area carefully.<\/p>\n<p>While auditions are only 20 minutes long, we want to learn more about you during the process. Be prepared to share a bit about yourself and why you wish to pursue a music degree. We&#8217;ll also set aside time to answer your questions or connect you with faculty who can help.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Voice<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Singing two songs from memory that showcase your voice at its best. We recommend selecting contrasting styles to demonstrate your versatility. You may choose from various genres, including but not limited to: art songs, folk songs, hymns, arias, musical theatre, and gospel. You can sing in English or another language for one or both of your selections.<\/li>\n<li>Vocalizing to help us determine your vocal range and quality<\/li>\n<li>Explorations in how you understand written music and tonal memory<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A pianist will be available to accompany you during the audition. Some examples include (but are not limited to):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies by Matteo Carcassi from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 Etudes, Op. 60<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selections from Leo Brouwer\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etudes Simples,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vol. 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fernando Sor\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edited by Segovia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be familiar with basic right- and left-hand techniques and comfortable reading in the first position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Students interested in other music genres, such as jazz and rock, may also audition. For more information, please reach out to Dr. Jody Graves at <a href=\"mailto:jgraves@ewu.edu\">jgraves@ewu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Piano<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform three pieces by memory from the standard repertoire, each in a different style. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No arrangements, please.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examples include (but are not limited to):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baroque<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Bach, Scarlatti Sonatas<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Classical<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven Sonata movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Romantic: Chopin Nocturnes or Preludes, Brahms Intermezzi<\/li>\n<li>French: Debussy Preludes, Ravel Sonatine<\/li>\n<li>20th Century: Works by Bart\u00f3k, Prokofiev, Ginastera, Shostakovich, Copland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play scales and arpeggios, up to 4 octaves. You may perform them at a tempo that best reflects your musicality and technical ability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a sight-reading exam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring (or send in advance ) a list of the repertoire you\u2019ve studied and performed. Alternatively, you may send a recording that showcases representative pieces of your repertoire.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An acceptable audition will qualify you for applied lessons with a major performance artist-teacher.
