Program Director Gregory Spatz is the author of the novels\u00a0Inukshuk<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Fiddler’s Dream<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0No One But Us<\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0and of the story collections\u00a0Half as Happy<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Wonderful Tricks<\/em><\/strong>. His stories have appeared in many publications, including\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em>,\u00a0Glimmer Train Stories<\/em>,\u00a0Shenandoah<\/em>,\u00a0Epoch<\/em>,\u00a0Kenyon Review<\/em>,\u00a0New England Review<\/em>,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Zyzzyva<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0He has written for\u00a0Poets and Writers<\/em><\/strong>, as well as\u00a0The Oxford American<\/em><\/strong>. He is the recipient of a Michener Fellowship, an Iowa Arts Fellowship, a Washington State Book Award, and a 2012 NEA Fellowship in literature. Spatz also plays the fiddle in the twice Juno-nominated bluegrass band John Reischman and the Jaybirds.<\/p>\n

When not on the road with the Jaybirds or busy at work teaching and writing, he enjoys playing music with his wife, Caridwen, also a fiddler, and being a step-dad to her two sons Tal and Angus.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Johnson\u2019s poems have been anthologized in Best American Poetry, published in recent issues of Ploughshares<\/strong><\/em>, Southern Review<\/strong><\/em>, Witness<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, Prairie Schooner<\/strong><\/em>, Poetry Northwest<\/strong><\/em>, New Ohio Review<\/strong><\/em>, Missouri Review<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and Gettysburg Review<\/strong><\/em>, and read on NPR\u2019s Writer\u2019s Almanac<\/strong>. His books include the poetry collections Mastodon, 80% Complete<\/strong><\/em> (Carnegie Mellon, 2001), In the Land We Imagined Ourselves<\/strong><\/em> (Carnegie Mellon 2010), and May Is an Island<\/strong><\/em> (Carnegie Mellon 2018); and the memoirs, Hannah and the Mountain<\/strong><\/em> (Nebraska, 2005) and The Desk on the Sea<\/strong><\/em> (Wayne State, 2019). Ode, his play about John Keats and Fanny Brawne, was produced as part of the GetLit! Literary Festival, and his fiction has appeared recently in Ploughshares<\/strong><\/em>, Bellevue Literary Review<\/strong><\/em>, and Missouri Review<\/strong><\/em>. Johnson migrates between the Northwest; his hometown of Marquette, Michigan; and his ancestral village of Glenelg in the Scottish Highland where his cousins are still crofters.<\/p>\n

In addition to his regular course load, Jonathan teaches a unique summer writing class from Yellowstone National Park. All students in previous sections of this course have watched wolves. Other observations have included wild trout, grizzly bears, falcons, mountain goats, and bison (lots and lots of bison). Rachel Toor is the author of five books of creative nonfiction:\u00a0Write Your Way In<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(Chicago, 2016);\u00a0Misunderstood <\/strong><\/em>(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2015);\u00a0Personal Record<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Nebraska, 2008);\u00a0The Pig and I<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(Penguin, 2005; Nebraska, 2009) and\u00a0Admissions Confidential<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(St. Martin’s, 2001). Her first novel,\u00a0On the Road to Find Out<\/strong><\/em>, was published in 2014 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.\u00a0She writes a monthly column on issues in writing and publishing for\u00a0The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and “Everything is Copy,” which appears monthly in the Spokesman-Review. She was a longtime contributor to\u00a0Running Times\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and in 2012 she was given an award for journalistic excellence by the Road Runners of America. Her work has appeared in\u00a0<\/strong>The New York Times<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>Ploughshares<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0SB Nation<\/strong>,\u00a0Glamour<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0Inside Higher Ed<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>Reader<\/em>‘<\/em><\/strong>s Digest<\/strong>,\u00a0The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0The LA Times<\/em><\/strong>, and other various and diverse publications. Three times she has had essays listed as Notable in Best American Sports Writing, and once in Best American Essays, and in 2017 she received a Special Mention for\u00a0the Pushcart Prize. She’s been sponsored by Athleta and SkirtSports.<\/p>\n

After graduating from Yale, Rachel spent a dozen years as an acquisitions editor at Oxford and Duke University Presses.
