Congratulations to EWU McNair Scholar\u00a0Saul Bautista<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for completing his Summer Research with\u00a0Dr. Ann C. Le Bar<\/strong><\/a>! Saul was one of six students selected for a research position through\u00a0Hanford National Park<\/strong><\/a> spanning from June to August 2023. Having supplied plutonium for the Manhattan Project, the Tri-Cities, WA site investigated the community impacts. Saul focused on the Hispanic community of Hanford, largely Mexican immigrants, reviewing transcripts from the\u00a0Bracero Program<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/a>His research was presented on August 16, 2023 at the McNair Summer Research Symposium.<\/p>\n

Saul describes Bracero as an immigrant program from the 1940s designed to increase agricultural development in the USA, which granted rights to the workers. The designation of immigrant rights eventually led to program dissolution in the 1960s. Saul found evidence of radiation poisoning amongst the greatly exposed Hispanic community and the Hanford Site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Saul visited the B reactor (one of four), saying \u201cThey\u2019re way smaller than I imagined.\u201d While there, Saul got to talk with the previous engineers whose explanation of the technology reminded him of \u201ca steam plant\u201d. The engineer also noted there was a \u201cblinder effect\u201d in place for workers during the Manhattan Project, each focus team only knew how their respective sections worked.<\/p>\n

This reactor room was Saul\u2019s favorite as the largest part of the reactor itself. Visiting on the anniversary of Hiroshima and seeing Oppenheimer on the same weekend (though Saul notes he\u2019s \u201cteam Barbie\u201d).<\/p>\n

For interested History Scholars, Saul advises to \u201cAlways keep in contact with the faculty! They\u2019re more than likely to have a program that interests you (with very limited spots).
