It will feature a variety of events and a daylong conference.<\/p>\n<p>An Earth Day fair and the grand opening for EWU\u2019s new Eagle Station bus plaza, on Friday, April 22, led into this full week of activities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86733\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid wp-image-86733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/20211105-PrairieGreenhouse-012-1-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\"ewu students preparing seeds\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/20211105-PrairieGreenhouse-012-1-768x512-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/20211105-PrairieGreenhouse-012-1-768x512-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EWU students prepare seeds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Highlights of this week include a daylong conference, <strong>Sovereignty Through Sustainability, <\/strong>to be held on <strong>Tuesday, April 26, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m<\/strong> <strong>inside the NCR in the PUB.\u00a0 <\/strong>The day\u2019s discussions will explore key climate change issues, and how they are impacting our region\u2019s Native tribes and surrounding communities. David May, EWU\u2019s interim president, will present a keynote address to open the day\u2019s full slate of dialogue and activities.<\/p>\n<p>Margo Hill, associate professor of urban and regional planning, and Erin Ross, director of tribal relations, are hosting the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Among the topics they\u2019ll cover are natural resource management in the context of climate change, the impact of wildfires on our region and ways of connecting the prairie restoration work with food sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, representatives from the Spokane Tribe of Indians and other regional tribes will share details about what they\u2019re doing for sustainability. Panelists will offer their input, and Eastern faculty members will share perspectives on how all of our efforts tie together, and ways in which we can continue to develop and deepen collaborative relations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86735\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-86735 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/Garden-photo-6-768x444-1.jpg\" alt=\"ewu's community garden\" width=\"768\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/Garden-photo-6-768x444-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/cahss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/04\/Garden-photo-6-768x444-1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EWU&#8217;s Campus Community Garden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Other events for Sustainability Week<\/strong> <strong>include a Prairie Restoration volunteer event, to be held from 1-4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at the Research Greenhouse; an EWU Community Garden volunteer event, 1-4 p.m. on Thursday, April 28; and a Campus Clean Up, starting at the Campus Mall, 10 a.m.- noon on Friday, April 29.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Erik Budsberg, EWU\u2019s director of sustainability and coordinator of the week\u2019s events, says the mission for this year\u2019s Earth Day and Sustainability Week is to expand our collective definition of sustainability and to \u201cthink about sustainability in a much broader perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally we need to approach things with the understanding that everything you do should be environmentally friendly, socially just, and economically viable,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The Eastern community also needs to consider the earth and the role we all can play in sustainability \u2014 not just on Earth Day or during sustainability week but every day, Budsberg adds: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to do it all \u2014 every little bit counts.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sustainability Week, April 25 \u2013 29, is about celebrating the work that the EWU community is doing to reduce the university\u2019s impact on the environment, while also looking toward the future and finding new ways to make a difference for our planet.
