Placement Test

English Placement Test

The English Placement Test is given to new, current or transferring students who have not taken college-level English courses.

1

Make an Appointment with Your Advisor

  • If you are a Running Start student who has never taken the English Placement Test, contact the Running Start office at 509.359.6155. The Running Start office will also help you schedule your test and pay your fee.
  • If you are an English Language Institute (ELI) student, you do not need to take the English Placement Test. You will receive your placement from ELI.
2

Register for a Test Date

Contact Kerri Boyd at 509.359.7064 or by email at klboyd@ewu.edu to register.

  • There are no test dates available during the weeks of final exams, holidays, spring and winter breaks, or during the last five weeks before the start of fall quarter.
  • It can take up to three weeks to receive your placement score, so schedule your test early enough that you can still register for courses.
3

Pay the Test Fee

Go to EagleNet and click on “Pay Bill/Optional Charges,” or visit Student Financial Services to pay the fee. Make sure to keep your receipt!

4

Take the Test

The English Placement Test consists of a timed written essay with a prompt provided by the English Composition Program. You will have 1.5 hours to complete the test. Bring your receipt of payment or Running Start gold sheet and photo ID.

5

Receive Your Score

You will be contacted when your test has been evaluated and your placement has been determined. Depending on your writing skills, you will be placed in ENGL 112, ENGL 100, ENGL 101 or ENGL 201.

If you need to retake the test, you must wait at least two weeks and pay the placement test fee again. You only get one retest. If both tests have the same results, you will be required to start in the course you’ve placed into. Running Start students should speak to their Running Start advisor regarding retests.
