In the Conducting Emphasis for the Master of Music program, you’ll study music from different historical periods, perform with the ensemble of your choosing, and get hands-on experience.

Conducting Emphasis, Master of Music (MM)

Notes:

  • all master’s degrees in music require an oral comprehensive exam;
  • students with a focus on choral conducting should take vocal pedagogy (MUSC 564D) and diction as directed study (MUSC 599); 
  • students seeking the MM in Conducting option must take MUSC 520 in their first quarter of enrollment.

Conducting students will conduct a full concert, or the equivalent. Conducting graduate recital may be divided across three quarters.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully earn a Master in Music with Conducting Emphasis from EWU should be able to do the following:

  • master conducting techniques in a variety of settings including orchestra, wind ensemble, choral groups, etc.;
  • experience regular application of conducting in small and large ensembles;
  • understand the pedagogical principles of rehearsal techniques, managing rehearsal schedules and personnel, and knowledge of obtaining scores, materials and venues for concert series;
  • learn scoring, orchestration and instrumentation/voice techniques;
  • have practical experiences conducting in public concerts, including final projects which will be recorded for future professional opportunities;
  • gain knowledge in the conducting techniques of famous conductors, and develop the nuances of rehearsal and preparation techniques for successful outcomes.
