Alternative Route

The Alternative Route Program at Eastern Washington University provides formal instruction and certification for individuals who are currently employed in a Washington State K-12 school who desire to become full-time teachers, or who hold a bachelor's degree and are desiring to pursue a career in teaching. Our Alternative Route Program allows you to build upon previous education and work experience to reduce the time and cost of the program. We offer four routes to certification:

  1. Route 1: For classified instructional employees (e.g., paraeducators) with Associate's degrees.
  2. Route 2: For classified staff with Bachelor's degrees.
  3. Route 3: For "career changers" with Bachelor's degrees.
  4. Route 4: For district staff with Bachelor's degrees employed on conditional or emergency substitute certificates.

Please click here to view an infographic detailing these four routes, courtesy of PESB (Professional Educators Standards Board).
