Ashley Hirt teaches Music in the Humanities at EWU. A native of the Kansas City, Missouri area, she holds a Master of Arts in Music History from the University of Idaho and is completing her PhD in Musicology from the University of Kansas, where she has studied under Dr. Roberta Schwartz and Dr. Sherrie Tucker. She has taught music history survey courses at the University of Idaho and the University of Kansas, and has served as quarterly faculty at EWU prior to her recent appointment. Ashley's research examines issues of nationality, gender and identity in contemporary popular music, with an emphasis on the globalization and educational culture of jazz in an increasingly connected world. Her additional research interests include music in film (specifically science fiction), brass pedagogy, and improvisation. Ashley is also an experienced low brass musician and has played trombone and euphonium professionally for many years.

Ashley was an Alternate for a Fulbright Fellowship to Norway in 2014 to observe and document methods of jazz education in Norway's secondary academic institutions. She has presented original research at several major academic conferences. Prior to moving to Eastern Washington, she was active as a performer on low brass, voice, and keyboards in the Kansas City area, playing everything from Latin band to big band jazz to contemporary opera to Baroque dance suites. She currently performs as a trombonist with Spokane's Tuxedo Junction Big Band. Ashley's chamber music compositions and arrangements have been performed by the Black House Collective and the H2 Saxophone Quartet.
