Activities

In addition to these research reports, there are three major additional areas of scholarship, knowledge, and reporting/publication that will be carried out by the program. These are also part of the activities of the NW TTAP, and SURTCOM efforts including staff and researchers from other universities will be utilized for these activities, to be led by Rowena Yeahquo and Dick Winchell. These are:·        

  • Education  - We will identify, map, and complete a description on-line for all tribal community and local colleges, training centers, and links to higher education. This will be presented on the website and in an overview presentation that includes GIS maps of locations, basic data and information on each program, and initial contact to address tribal transportation and mobility needs as well as career development. EWU's NW TTAP has been active in AISES (the American Indian Sciences and Engineering Society), including student and faculty participation in national meetings (Hill) and has supported both AISES and AIBL (the American Indian Business Leaders) efforts to identify and support careers in STEM, transportation, and tribal issues. The NW Region Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) created a series of videos that are still used to encourage tribal leaders to promote tribal transportation related careers, and explain the importance of these careers. These will be linked on the SURTCOM and EWU websites, and efforts will be made to update these programs. The effort will include identification of active AISES and AIBL chapters, connection to organization resources, and listing of contacts and information.  
  • Workforce Development - The NW TTAP and EWU Tribal Planning has worked with tribes across the region and nation to recognize the potential and address careers for tribal transportation and related employment. This has come through support for tribal TERO programs and expanding the role of data collection and analysis of workforce information for each tribe, and for the region. We will also work with partners to support and expand awareness of careers and employment in tribal transportation. EWU has actively supported and completed training for data collection and analysis by tribe in the US Census Bureau Local Employment Dynamics data, as well as additional workforce, demographic and social data available in the US Census and other reports, but often not actively used by individual tribes. 
  • Technology Transfer - The NW TTAP and EWU Tribal Planning have supported and carried out Technology Transfer through training; newsletters; outreach; research leading to workshops, webinars, and publications; and direct technical assistance around all aspects of tribal transportation, and this will be expanded and enhanced to focus on mobility. We plan to develop and support both degree and non-degree workshops and training, host webinars, workshops, and conferences, and coordinate with other partners (federal, state, tribal and local) to identify, address, and utilize tribal knowledge and best cases as responses in addition to technology to best serve American Indian reservations and peoples. 

We have already participated in meetings and had excellent participation from MSU and NDSU program faculty/staff in our research, including participation in our Northwest Tribal Transportation Symposium (March, 2017), the planned National Tribal Transportation Conference (September, 2017), with workshops on leadership, safety, and mobility. We expect to continue these efforts, and through our research and partnership with SURTCOM, be able to create data-driven understanding, analysis, and actions to address critical tribal needs for mobility and lead to policy and response based on mobility research and outreach to tribes.
