Accounting Recruitment

What is Accounting Recruitment?

Accounting Recruitment is the process most public accounting firms use to hire interns, full-time employees and summer leadership candidates. Some firms hire as early as a year in advance.

For a list of this year's participating firms, visit Handshake.

If you are interested in a firm that is not listed or are interested in pursuing accounting opportunities outside of a traditional CPA firm, contact Career Services. We have worked with students who have been hired into big four firms as well as area companies.

When is Accounting Recruitment?

Recruitment for most accounting CPA firms begins over the summer months and concludes during the fall with interviews and offers extended in late September through November.

Recruitment begins well before classes start, so be prepared!

Timeline:

  • Late June - Early August: Most firms will begin posting their opportunities in Handshake during the summer months. This is the time to apply for internships, full-time positions and some summer leadership conferences. CAREFULLY READ THE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH FIRM! Some firms will require that you apply via Handshake AND their firm website. Following application instructions for each firm is paramount.
  • Late September - October: The first round of interviews will typically begin in late September on campus at EWU (Cheney or Spokane). Students invited to interview will be contacted via Handshake and first-round on-campus interviews will be scheduled through the Handshake Interview portal. Second, and possibly third, interviews usually occur at the firm.

How to Prepare

The most successful students have carefully prepared for full-time employment with internships, relevant work experience, academic projects, faculty recommendations, and professional development experiences by fall of their senior year.

To be prepared for recruiting students should seize every opportunity to meet and network with accounting firms and industry leaders. By the time students near completion of the accounting program they should have a strong idea of the type of firm they would like to work for.

Preparation Timeline:

  • Sophomore/Junior Year: Participate in summer leadership conferences at one or more CPA firms.
  • Junior Year (or summer after):  Do at least one accounting internship. Some students intern at one firm in the summer and another during the academic year. Take advantage of the spring quarter and summer months to get your application materials in order and practice your networking and interview skills.
  • Senior Year: Interview for full-time accounting positions and complete internships.

To be successful and competitive, you need to participate in the following:

  • Handshake Profile: Update your profile information in Handshake. Handshake is the primary tool used by Career Services to communicate about events, positions, recruitment updates, interviews, employer events and more. This is where open positions will be posted and most interviews will be scheduled. You must have a current EWU email address in Handshake.
  • Professional Development Events: Participate in events that cover resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, networking, interviewing, etiquette and more. This includes Interview IQ (spring quarter) and interviewing workshops offered throughout the year. Visit ewu.edu/careerservices/events and/or Handshake often for a frequently updated list of events.
  • Resume & Cover Letter Reviews: Make an appointment with a Career Services Advisor via Handshake.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice your interview skills with a Career Services Advisor. Schedule via Handshake .
  • Beta Alpha Psi (BAP): Join Beta Alpha Psi, EWU's professional accounting fraternity, and participate in their events. BAP organizes frequent events each year to bring accounting students and accounting professionals together for networking, information sharing and professional development. Two of their popular events include the BAP Summer BBQ and Meet the Professionals. Visit ewubap.org for membership and event information.
