Scholarship Opportunities

Requirements & Guidelines:

• Student must have declared a major in Education, with an interest in teaching first grade
• Student must have a 3.0 GPA
• Student must demonstrate a need for financial assistance

• Student must be majoring in Education with interest to become a teacher.

• Student must be majoring in Education with the intent to teach K-12, junior/community college, or university levels
• Student must have junior or senior standing
• Student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5
• Preference given to students who have received awards for their art within high school, college, or the community.

• Student should demonstrate strong leadership and teaching skills through one of the following:
  • Paid teaching environment
  • Personal volunteer experience
• Student must be studying one of the following:
  • Literacy

  • Leadership
• Student must submit three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Two (2) from a previous EWU professor
  • One (1) from either a previous EWU professor -or- a community-based volunteer service supervisor

• Must demonstrate merit and financial need

• Candidate has already been awarded a bachelor’s degree in any concentration of study
• Application submitted to EWU Master’s in Teaching Program (MIT), elementary (K-8)
• Resident within eastern Washington
• Demonstrated commitment to school-aged youth through community involvement
• Demonstrated financial need – done through FAFSA application
• Ability to be a full-time student in the MIT program starting June 27, 2022

1. Complete the application for the EWU MIT Program through EWU Graduate Studies Office. For an application to be considered complete, all transcripts and supporting documents must be included with your admission application
   – Choose from dropdown choices “Education: Master’s in Teaching MED
2. Submit a FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for both 2021-22 AND 2022-23
3. Submit a 500-word essay to educgrad@ewu.edu attention: Ann Van Wig (*see disclaimers section below). Your essay must include the following information:
   – Background working with school-aged youth
   – Statement of your “why” for pursuing the field of education
   – How will this scholarship help you engage as a teacher of diversity in your community and beyond?
4. Applications will be reviewed by an external committee comprised of teachers of color from the eastern Washington region.
5. The EWU Financial Aid and Scholarships Office will review for financial need and report to the committee.
6. Two eligible candidates will be chosen on basis of:
   a. Commitment to working with school-aged children
   b. Vision of engagement with a community of diverse learners
   c. Financial need
7. Successful candidates will be notified by May 1, 2022 by EWU School of Education Master’s in Teaching Director

REMINDER: Official academic transcript(s) must be included at the time of your application to the MIT Program for you to be considered for this fellowship. If your official academic transcripts are not included and the April 1 deadline has not passed, contact us immediately to resolve this requirement.  Transcripts already on file at EWU (through Admission, other departments, etc.) will not be sought and attached on your behalf.  It is your responsibility to attach all required documentation during the scholarship application process.
