Dr. Ann Le Bar received the Teacher of the Year Award from EWU's student association.

Dr. Larry Cebula received the college's Best Service Award.

Dr. Julie Neuffer received the Best Biography Prize from the Mormon History Association for Helen Andelin and the Fascinating Womanhood Movement (University of Utah Press, 2015)

Dr. Nydia Martinez will join the Department of History and the Chicano Education program this fall.  She specializes in Latin American history and Chicano history.

The annual History Department Award Luncheon was held on May 29th.  About 45 students, faculty (both current and former) and staff attended the event.   Alumnus Bryan Carter received the Cecil Dryden Alumni Award; Casey Baulne, Michael Edwards and Anna Harbine received Graduate Awards, Logan Camporeale received both the Undergraduate Award abd the Frances B. Huston Award; Alexandra Honican, David Collins, Hannah Bancroft and Elizabeth Stadtmueller were awarded History Scholarships; Logan Camporeale, Alexandra Honican and Kelsey Lavelle shared the Phi Alpha Theta Award; and Daniel Christensen and Samuel Coleston received the Jeffers R. Chertok Honors.  This year's Outstanding History or Social Studies Students are:  Jacob T. Adams, Katherine M. Boehnke, William H. Breckenridge, Thomas E. Breysse, Susannah J. Brooke, Logan Camporeale, Daniel Christensen, Anna Greiner-Shelton, Grant R. Harper, Clinton J. Hodgson, Tyler A. Jolly, Kelsey Lavelle, Michael Longwill, Karly Muller, Hailey Ziegler, Tony Bowe, Joshua Gallegos,, Kevin Hunter, Jaime Mahoney, Ashley Morsenson, Keith Shelton, Braydon Smith and Marisa Tramp.

Dr. Larry Cebula received an EWU community engagement research grant for his public history project.

Dr. Julie Neuffer was interviewed in November by Utah Public Radio about her new book Helen Andelin.

Dr. John Collins' article entitled "Hidden in Plain Sight: Martial Law and the Making of the High Courts of Justics, 1642-1660" has just appeared in the Journal of British Studies No. 4 (Oct. 2014).

Dr. Bill Youngs gave a presentation in November entitled "The National Parks: The International Experience" at Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan.

Dr. Laura Hodgman was invited in November to give a presentation entitled "Telemann and the Career of the Cantate as a Consumer Good" at Martin-Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.

Dr. Laura Hodgman was interviewed in November by a Spokane radio station about her current project on the LGBT community in Spokane County.

Ms. Sydney Stover, a former MA student, just got a park ranger job at the Sitka National Historical Park in Alaska.

Brian Carter, a former MA student, has just finished his PhD at Oklahoma State University and got a job at the University of Seattle.

Liping Zhu has just won the Caroline Bancroft History Prize for The Road to Chinese Exclusion: The Denver Riot, 1880 Election, and Rise of the West.

Julie Neuffer's book Helen Andelin and the Fascinating Womanhood Movement was published by the University of Utah.

Liping Zhu was named Distinguished Speaker by the Western history Association at its annual meeting in October 2014.

Emeritus Faculty member Fred Lauritsen, on June 19, 2014, donated $1,000 to the History Department Scholarship fund.

Lee Nilsson, a recent graduate of our MA program, has accepted a permanent position at the US State Department in Washington, D.C.  His title is Junior All Source Analyst for the Bureau of International Information Program. Congratulations!

The history department annual awards and honors luncheon was held in PUB on May 30, 2014. More than 40 people attended the event.

Dr. Julie D. Neuffer's book, Helen Andelin and the Fascinating Womanhood Movement (University of Utah Press) is going to be released in August 2014.

Dr. Liping Zhu is to give a keynote speech at the Western Writers of America annual conference in Sacramento on June 26, 2014. The title of his talk is "Chinese Inclusion in Telling Western Stories."

Dr. Edward Slack Jr.'s book, Navigating the Spanish Lake: the Pacific in the Iberian World, 1521-1898, is published in May 2014 by the University of Hawaii Press.

Dr. Michael Conlin's manuscript, "One Nation Divided by Slavery: Remembering the Founders while Marching toward the Civil War," has been accepted for publication by Kent State University Press. The book will be released in 2015.

Dr. Michael Conlin's article, "The Dangerous Isms and the Fanatical Ists: Antebellum Conservatives in the North and South confront the Modernity Conspiracy," appears in Journal of the Civil War Era 4(June 2014).

Dr. Bill Youngs presented his talk, "The Nation Parks: An International Perspective," for the global studies lecture series at EWU on May 15, 2014.

In April 2014, six history students presented papers at Phi Alpha Theta regional conference in Coeur d'Alene. In May, the club will hold its formal initiation ceremony for its new members.

Dr. John Collins's manuscript, "Martial Law and English Laws, c. 1500-c. 1700," has been accepted for publication by Cambridge University Press.

On April 17, 2014, Distinguished Professor Linda B. Hall of the University of New Mexico gave a talk at EWU about her latest book Dolores Del Rio: Beauty in Light and Shade.

Dr. Jerry Garcia's book, Looking Like the Enemy: Japanese Mexican, the Mexican State, and US Hegemony, 1897-1945, was published in January 2014 by the University of Arizona Press.

Dr. Liping Zhu's Book, The Road to Chinese Exclusion: The Denver Riot, 1880 Election and Rise of the West, was published in October 2013 by the University Press of Kansas.
