Peer Mentoring Program

Introduction

The Chicana/o/x Studies Program, in collaboration with EWU’s Career Center and Office of Alumni Relations, has developed an in-person Peer Mentoring Program into a hybrid structure for two interconnected mentoring programs. The Peer Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for first-year first-generation Latina/o/x students to connect with advanced students of similar backgrounds to assist them with the academic and cultural transitions into college. Second, our Alumni/Community Mentoring Program focuses in supporting advanced first-generation Latina/o/x students to connect with working professionals to assist them with the transition from academic to professional settings.

Both mentoring programs build on partnerships with the internal and external Latina/o/x communities of students and professionals. Our ability to reach, connect, and support students and community members across our region functions through the Career Center’s online platform, Eagle Career Network (ECN). The ECN helps to facilitate conversations and collaborations between students, community members, and our Chicana/o/x Studies team at EWU. Hence, the need for online and in-person cultural, social, and educational events like workshops and keynote speakers that brings these groups together are vital components of these two overlapping mentoring programs to attract, retain, and support first-generation Latina/o/x students at EWU.

Become a Mentor

We’re looking for mentors to serve as a resource to fellow grads and current students by sharing your own academic experience. As a mentee, you will have the opportunity to be guided by another experienced student through a variety of pathways. Both in the broader Eagle Career Network, as well as in our Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x, and Hispanic Mentoring Group. This program will be launched in fall quarter 2020.

When you join as a mentor, you will be able to:

Community Mentor

EWU’s Career Center and Office of Alumni Relations are teaming up to launch a new professional networking and mentorship community, called the Eagle Career Network, and Chicana/o/x Studies has been chosen as a pilot group! We’re looking for alumni and friends of our community to serve as a resource to fellow grads and current students by sharing your own professional experience, both in the broader Eagle Career Network, as well as in our Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x, and Hispanic Mentoring Group.
