Health Insurance<\/h2>\n
Health care in the US can be very expensive.\u00a0 You will be responsible for all of your medical costs unless you have adequate health insurance. Even if you do have health insurance, you will likely have a copay or coinsurance which will require you to help pay for each service or treatment you access.<\/p>\n
EWU does not offer health insurance for international students. If you are looking for a health insurance provider in the US, past EWU international students have used iNext International Insurance<\/a>,\u00a0PSI Health Insurance<\/a>, and\u00a0PGH Global<\/a>.\u00a0 NAFSA Association of International Educators keeps a list of partner providers:\u00a0NAFSA Association of International Educators Health Insurance Global Partners<\/a>.\u00a0 It is important for you to research companies and their offerings to decide which might best meet your needs.<\/p>\n
Students may also qualify to use a\u00a0Health Insurance Marketplace<\/a>\u00a0to find affordable individual coverage.\u00a0 Washington State has it’s own exchange and rules and can be accessed online at\u00a0https:\/\/www.wahealthplanfinder.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n

General Tax Information<\/h2>\n
\n\nAll international students, scholars, and their dependents are required to file a tax form with the US government for each tax year that they are in the US, even if they did not earn any income.\u00a0 The deadline for completing the tax form is usually in mid-April each year.\u00a0 Completing the form late may result in a fee, but it is better to complete it late than not at all!<\/p>\n
The IRS Form 8843 \u201cStatement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition\u201d shows nonresident status for US tax purposes.\u00a0 It tells the US that you are exempt from filing US taxes, and it must be completed each year you are inside the US.\u00a0 US scholarships covering room and board, course fees, book reimbursements and medical insurance are taxable. \u00a0Tuition and required course fees are considered qualified tuition and related expenses and are not taxable. \u00a0If\u00a0you have\u00a0taxable income\u00a0you are required to file\u00a0a tax return\u00a0called\u00a0a\u00a01040-NR.<\/p>\n
If you are legally employed in the US, some taxes will be withheld from your wages and paid by your employer directly to the US tax authorities.\u00a0 You may be entitled to a refund of some or all of this amount, but you must file your tax return to have the money returned.<\/p>\n
Filing tax forms correctly is very important.\u00a0 Failure to file can impact your future visa and\/or status requests in the US.\u00a0 It is YOUR responsibility to file your tax forms.\u00a0 University staff members are not authorized to give tax advice.<\/p>\n
Do not use an online tax filing service intended for US tax residents such as TurboTax or H&R Block.\u00a0 Services that are intended for international students and other nonresidents is appropriate.\u00a0\u00a0EWU students have often used\u00a0Glacier Tax Prep<\/a>\u00a0which offers online chat and phone assistance to customers.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
