The MA degree in English: Literature and Writing emphasizes critical study in English and American Literature as preparation for advanced study in a PhD program or for careers that rely on research, critical analysis, careful reading, and clear written communication.

Special Program Requirements

  1. GRE
  2. March 1 application deadline for fall admission for those seeking a graduate service appointment as a teaching assistant. Students seeking a graduate service appointment should submit an additional application letter expressing their interest in teaching and any teaching experience they have.
  3. Application essay: Essay explaining why student wants to enter this program and the student's future plans after completing the program
  4. GPA
  5. Undergraduate transcripts
  6. Writing sample: Paper of ten or more pages that best displays student's rhetorical, writing, and researching capabilities
  7. Two letters of recommendation from former professors who would be able to assess student's potential for graduate work and, if student is applying for a GSA position, potential for teaching composition at the college level
