English: Teaching English as a Second Language

The MA degree in English: TESL prepares pre-service and in-service teachers of speakers of English as a second language (ESL), or a foreign language (EFL), to teach second language literacy, culture, and communication skills.

Special Program Requirements

  • All applicants are required to arrange an in-person or phone interview to discuss the program and admissions process with the TESL graduate program director, Dr. LaVona Reeves, before applying to the program.
  • GRE score
  • Submit an 800-1,000 word letter explaining what in their background (formal education, professional experience, personal life, as appropriate) has led them to apply to the MA in English-TESL program and what they hope to accomplish by completing a degree in this area.
  • Submit a recent writing sample of academic work.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation.
  • All students must demonstrate a reading competence in a foreign language appropriate to their program of study at a level equivalent to completion of one year of college foreign language. Competence may be demonstrated through coursework, a standardized test or a written test arranged with the Modern Languages Department.
  • March 1 application deadline for fall admission for those seeking a GSA (graduate service appointment) as a teaching assistant. Students seeking a GSA should submit an additional application letter to the TESL graduate program director expressing their interest and any teaching experience they have.
