Tuition Waivers

Each year, EWU awards a limited number of tuition waivers and other forms of support on a competitive basis through the Office of Graduate Studies. These are awarded to graduate students of outstanding promise based upon the recommendation of an academic program or administrative office. Departments recommend students for awards from annual departmental waiver allocations. Follow the links below or on the left menu for information about the three tuition waiver programs administered in the Graduate Studies Office.

Graduate Service Appointments (GSAs)

GSAs are available to qualified Washington resident or nonresident graduate students. Most awards include tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance eligibility. Recipients work 20 hours per week teaching, supporting teaching, or providing administrative service.

NRTS Waivers

These scholarships allow for a portion of a Non-Resident's tuition to be waived--about $4,100 a year for 2017-18.  No service required.

Visit our NRTS waivers page to learn more.

WICHE Waivers

WICHE is a consortium of Western States that offers competitive tuition waivers to graduate students in certain disciplines to pay Resident or close to Resident tuition rates, instead of Non-Resident rates. No service is required. See if your state or program qualifies you. (Prospective Occupational or Physical Therapy students should check this link instead.)

Visit our WICHE waivers page to learn more.

Deadline to Accept a Tuition Waiver Offer

EWU abides by the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) April 15 Resolution, which obliges EWU to allow admitted graduate students to consider all offers of financial support for the Fall term through April 15. The resolution binds students to their decisions made or held in place after April 15. A copy of the resolution may be found here.

The April 15 deadline applies only to acceptance of an offer of financial support (such as a GSA or a tuition waiver like NRTS or WICHE). It is not a deadline for confirming your enrollment after you receive an offer of admission to your pgoram. Acceptance of an offer of financial support made after April 15, is conditional upon presentation by the student of written release from any previously accepted offer. For more information, contact Leslie Swannack, lswannack@ewu.edu, 509.359.4675.
