This week, EWU celebrates the career of nationally acclaimed author and Eastern grad Jess Walter. The JFK Library is joining in with a display about Jess Walter, his 2020 book The Cold Millions, and the contributions of Walter and other Eastern authors to the literature of the Inland Northwest. Check out out the display in the JFK Lobby, as well as a copy of The Cold Millions or another book by Jess Walter or the many other authors connected to EWU.

Expo at Eastern: World’s Fair Collections from the EWU Archives | Monday, April 15 – Friday, April 26 | JFK Gallery

Visit an exhibit in the JFK Gallery to see how a World’s Fair in Spokane spurred the use of an Eastern dorm to house visitors, featured a Folklife Festival next to the Flour Mill, and completely changed the face of downtown Spokane.

Speaker Panel | Tuesday, April 23 | 12 pm – 1 pm | JFK Lobby 

Join Eastern Washington University faculty as they present the legacy of Expo ‘74 from multidisciplinary perspectives.

  • J. William T. “Bill” Youngs, PhD, Professor of History. Dr. Youngs is the author of the seminal work The Fair and the Falls: Spokane’s Expo ‘74.
  • Margo Hill, MURP, JD, Program Director, American Indian Studies, and Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning. Professor Hill, who attended the event as a child, will share her reflections of tribal history and participation in Expo ‘74
  • Erin D. Dascher, PhD, Associate Professor of Geosciences. Dr. Dascher will reflect on the changes Expo ‘74 brought to the Spokane River, and explore the diverse ecosystem and current conservation efforts.

JFK Lobby | April 17-28, 2023

This exhibit features sixteen photographs taken by George and Frank Hirahara during their detainment at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Park County, Wyoming. The Hiraharas were a Japanese American family living in Yakima at the outset of World War II and were subject to mass removal along with over 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry.

Their photograph collection, consisting of over 2000 images, provides a perspective of life in the Japanese American incarceration camps from the perspective of one detained family.

The photographs are on loan from Washington State University.
