{"id":1328,"date":"2022-07-05T18:35:53","date_gmt":"2022-07-05T18:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=1328"},"modified":"2022-08-12T19:00:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T19:00:42","slug":"art-and-science-2","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/news\/art-and-science-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Art and Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 class=\"p1\">A glass-tiled \u201cmosaic mural\u201d adds a colorful focal point to Eastern\u2019s Interdisciplinary Science Center.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">E<span class=\"s1\">ven as students and faculty members continue settling into Eastern\u2019s new Interdisciplinary Science Center, the work of adorning the building\u2019s light-filled interior continues apace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Among the most striking of these decorative touches is a colorful, two-panel \u201cmosaic mural\u201d of glazed glass by Texas-based artist Dixie Friend Gay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1330\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1330 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/07\/20220308-DixieFriendGay-ISCMural-024-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/07\/20220308-DixieFriendGay-ISCMural-024-copy.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2022\/07\/20220308-DixieFriendGay-ISCMural-024-copy-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Texas-based artist Dixie Friend Gay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Friend Gay, whose public art inhabits spaces across the nation, says the twin mosaics, titled \u201cExpanding and Collapsing,\u201d are abstract designs \u201cinspired by the inside of a geode, the strata of folding earth, mapping and cells. The smaller, upper mural echoes the lower one, giving an impression of reflection, inverting the colors, playing with the light quality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The murals were selected by a faculty committee and funded by the state of Washington through its Art in Public Places program. They were mounted earlier this year in the open atrium area of the ISC, where the works were spaced to bisect two floors.
