Just weeks <\/span>after EWU\u2019s glittering new Interdisciplinary Science Center opened its doors, construction began on the $45 million first phase of a Science Building renovation \u2014 a companion project that promises to usher in a new era of research and discovery at Eastern.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Science Building, dubbed the \u201cHall of Sciences\u201d upon its completion<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0in 1962, is long overdue for an update, says David Bowman, dean of Eastern\u2019s College of STEM.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a Sputnik-era building designed for Sputnik-era science,\u201d Bowman told Eastern <\/i>magazine earlier this year. \u201cIt\u2019s just not designed for modern stuff; it\u2019s really, really challenging to do contemporary science in that building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Plans call for Leone & Keeble, the Spokane construction firm at work on the project, to implement a flexible, carefully engineered space that will assist Eastern\u2019s scientists and scholars in pursuing today\u2019s increasingly complex, interdisciplinary investigations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though most science instruction for students will take place next door in the ISC, the steel and glass skyways connecting the two buildings are more than symbolic. The links emphasize, according to Bowman, Eastern\u2019s stress on including students \u2014 undergraduates included \u2014 on even the most advanced investigations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the College of STEM, engaging students in faculty research is key,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
