{"id":1972,"date":"2023-07-11T17:34:33","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T17:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=1972"},"modified":"2023-09-21T22:58:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T22:58:07","slug":"making-history-2","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/news\/making-history-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Making History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\">W<span class=\"s1\">hile the end<\/span> to Eastern\u2019s greater ambitions came too soon \u2014 a heartbreaking final-second loss in the 2023 Big Sky Basketball Championship tournament \u2014 EWU\u2019s men\u2019s basketball team walked off the court in Boise knowing they\u2019d already cemented a season for the history books. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Head coach David Riley\u2019s squad, a group just a year removed from a big rebuild, came into the season with three returning starters, a core of experienced role players and high expectations. In preseason polling, however, coaches and sportswriters expressed their doubts, with both groups picking Eastern to finish no higher than fifth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The Eagles answered the doubters with a remarkable regular season that included a Big Sky record 16-0 start to conference play. That streak, part of a record-tying 18-game stretch of victories, earned them the regular season Big Sky Championship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Following a heartbreaking, last-second conference tournament exit, the team got a nod from the National Invitation Tournament, where, in the first round, they avenged an early-season defeat to Washington State with a gritty road win in Pullman. It was just the second postseason game win in program history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe talk in the locker room after the game was very, very brief about this game in particular. We played a good team and lost,\u201d Riley said. \u201cBut what these guys have done throughout the season, I can\u2019t tell them enough how much our coaching staff appreciates them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">A second-round loss to Oklahoma State brought the 2022-23 season to a close. Then the accolades began pouring in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">In March, Eagle\u2019s guard Steele Venters was named the Big Sky\u2019s Most Valuable Player, the conference\u2019s most coveted individual honor. It was the fifth time in seven years \u2014and seventh time overall \u2014 that the Big Sky\u2019s top accolade had been awarded to an Eastern player. In addition, Venters\u2019 teammate Angelo Allegri was named to the All-Conference First Team, while forward Ethan Price earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Coach Riley, meanwhile, was named Big Sky Coach of the Year, joining a distinguished list of seven previous EWU head coaches who have been awarded the conference\u2019s highest coaching honor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Not surprisingly, it was Riley who, after the season ended in Stillwater, shifted the focus back to where it belongs \u2014 on the student athletes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cThe talk in the locker room after the game was very, very brief about this game in particular.
