{"id":86450,"date":"2026-01-15T18:37:30","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T18:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/?post_type=stories&#038;p=86450"},"modified":"2026-01-15T20:04:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T20:04:56","slug":"polytechnic-with-distinction","status":"publish","type":"stories","link":"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/news\/polytechnic-with-distinction\/","title":{"rendered":"Polytechnic, With Distinction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Eastern gains national recognition for preparing its students for real-world success.<\/h6>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nEastern Washington University has only recently<\/strong> adopted an official identity as \u201cthe region\u2019s polytechnic.\u201d But for years it has earned national acclaim for what academic administrators like to call \u201cprioritizing the application of knowledge to professional practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year is no exception. Just prior to the beginning of the current academic term, EWU was designated a 2025-26 College of Distinction by an Austin, Texas-based organization that ranks universities according to their effectiveness in helping students \u201clearn, grow, and succeed.\u201d The honor represents, in effect, a national seal of approval for Eastern\u2019s impressive track record of preparing students for real-world success.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid alignright wp-image-86451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/01\/4-Distinctions-Badge__Engaged-Students-2025-copy-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/01\/4-Distinctions-Badge__Engaged-Students-2025-copy-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/01\/4-Distinctions-Badge__Engaged-Students-2025-copy-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ewu.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/01\/4-Distinctions-Badge__Engaged-Students-2025-copy.jpg 578w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eastern didn\u2019t just earn an overall \u201cCollege of Distinction\u201d designation \u2014 it was also recognized in eight specific program areas, as well as for its overall affordability and support for military students.<br \/>\n\u201cEWU has a proud history of providing a transformative undergraduate experience that prepares our students to thrive in the workforce and to serve as leaders in their communities,\u201d Shari McMahan, Eastern\u2019s president, wrote in a statement following the award announcement. \u201cBeing recognized as a College of Distinction across such a wide range of fields reaffirms our strength in hands-on learning, as well as our commitment to affordability and academic excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through research and interviews, Colleges of Distinction honors universities that \u201cmake a meaningful impact on students\u2019 lives, not just the institutions that fight their way to the top of the more traditional rankings lists.\u201d The recognition criteria is based on what they call the \u201cfour distinctions\u201d: engaging students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The Colleges of Distinction honor comes on the heels of a coveted status upgrade from the Carnegie Foundation, which last year designated EWU as one of the nation\u2019s Research Colleges and Universities. Both designations were important acknowledgments of Eastern\u2019s success in boosting collaborations and student opportunities.
