“Does imaging the deathly bring us closer to life?

Can I let go of attachment while holding on to my ego?

How can repetition transform consciousness?

Will dissolving the self give me a sense of belonging?

 What color is the sacred?

Iterations is a solo exhibition by lens-based interdisciplinary artist Erin Elyse Burns that brings several bodies of work into conversation with each other. They whisper about material abstraction and obsession. They make clear that the volume of internal quiet is in fact deafeningly loud. Held gently in the palm of a thoughtful hand, each idea is turned over, examined, turned over again and again. In the process they are polished into poignant exhaustion. Call these tumbled stones photographs, video, performance art, relics. Each artifact is interconnected and each line distinct.”

“Beyond the Fence

Ancient men and women tucked inside their secret homes hint at things gone and to come. The snake appears every few years, maybe more frequently now. Lightning speaks. Whatever I try to hide will find its way out. However far I reach inward, there will always be the unknown buried there from the beginning, a star, a seed, a night hallucination.

The selected paintings and prose are abstractions of dreams I’ve had from childhood on. I’ve arranged them to coincide with the seasons, the turning of the Earth, and the cycle of a life. Over many years of dreaming, certain characters, events, and places return. This is one cycle.”

The 2024 Student Research and Creative Works Symposium will be May 7 & 8, 2024

The annual symposium celebrates students as they present their research or creative works in a professional setting. The event includes poster sessions, oral presentations, interactive exhibits, and a variety of creative works.

The Creative Works segment of the Symposium will be the late afternoon on Tuesday, May 7. Every year we have students from all areas present work that varies from paintings, installation piece, music, theatre performances, and more.

If you are interested in showing your work, abstract submissions will open in early 2024; you can see information about them here.
