Job Posting Disclaimer

EWU Career Center does its very best to protect students and alumni from job scams on Handshake. However, we make no representations or guarantees about positions listed on our Handshake system.  Eastern Washington University is not responsible for safety, wages, working conditions, or other aspects of off-campus employment.  It is the responsibility of students and alumni to research the integrity of the organizations to which they are applying.  We advise you to use caution and common sense when applying for any position with an organization or private party.

Keep yourself safe when communicating with employers online.

  1. Avoid chat-only communication. Most  legitimate interviews happen over video services or phone. Chat-only communication could be a sign that you’re dealing with a scammer.
  2. Confirm the employer’s identity and contact information. Official communication from most organizations will come from an organizations email domain (e.g. name@ewu.edu). You should be careful of communications coming from addresses like nike@gmail.com. You should also watch out for spoofed emails.
  3. Don’t share sensitive personal information over chat or email. That includes passport or drivers license numbers, banking information, social security numbers, your mom’s maiden name, or anything else someone could use alone or in combination to pretend to be you.

BEWARE of these common scams!!!

  • Phishing – Applicant is directed to a false web site asking for personal or sensitive information. Scam companies steal the identity information.
  • Check Cashing – Applicant is sent check, asked to cash it and wire funds to scam company. When the applicant’s bank discovers the check is fake, the amount is subtracted from applicant’s account.

Understanding Professionalism

Professionalism is more than just presenting yourself well—it’s about earning trust and respect. Whether you’re navigating the workplace or building new connections, maintaining professionalism is key.

Below are some essential tips to help you stay polished in any professional setting.

Small Talk

In professional settings, avoid discussing sensitive topics like politics or religion. Be cautious with personal questions, such as “Do you have kids?” For more small talk tips, visit our networking page.

Handshakes

In the U.S., a handshake is a standard greeting in professional situations. Maintain firm, but not crushing, handshakes—no “fish hand” or sweaty palms. Align web-to-web and give one or two solid shakes while introducing yourself with a greeting like, “Hi, my name is…”

Your Online Presence

Be mindful of how your online presence is perceived. Posts, comments, and shared content shape how others view you, including potential employers. Avoid sharing personal opinions or trivial details that could be misinterpreted.

  • Set your social media privacy settings to private, but remember anything online could be seen by anyone.
  • Use LinkedIn for professional networking, not platforms like Twitter or Snapchat.
  • Google yourself regularly to see what employers might find.

Lunch Meetings & Interviews

  • Place your napkin on your lap immediately when seated.
  • Start with the outermost utensils and work your way in for each course.
  • Avoid messy foods like spaghetti, and never order the most expensive item.
  • Wait until everyone is served before eating, and treat waitstaff respectfully.
  • Do not order alcohol during an interview.

Alcohol & Substances

  • Alcohol: At company events, drink responsibly and avoid overindulgence.
    • Never order alcohol during an interview.
    • Once employed, stick to one drink and avoid trying new drinks.
  • Marijuana: Be aware of your employer’s stance on marijuana use.
    • Some industries prohibit its use, even in states where it’s legal.
    • Always follow company policies and avoid anything that could impair judgment or motor skills.

Professional Email Etiquette

Emails are essential for professional communication, but can be easily misinterpreted.

  • Always use a clear subject line and professional language.
  • Avoid abbreviations and emojis, and always check for grammar and spelling errors.
  • Respond within 24-48 hours, and acknowledge emails if more time is needed.
  • Use standard fonts and formatting, and avoid “reply all” unless necessary.
  • Ensure attachments are correct and appropriately sized.

RSVPs & Cancellations

Always respond to invitations, even if you can’t attend. If you accept an invite, make sure to follow through. If you need to cancel, communicate promptly and professionally.

Dress for the Situation

Dress according to the professional environment and occasion. When in doubt, opt for a more professional look. For examples of business attire, visit our  Pinterest page.

If you ever find yourself unsure about handling a professional situation, reach out to a Career Advisor or Make an Appointment.

Choose The Best Platform For Online Collaboration

Virtual interns need a place to share documents, assign tasks, and communicate regularly. An online collaboration platform ensures that everyone is on the same page. Ideally, there should be Video Conferencing and Project Management online tools in place to aid this process. Interns can also use these online platforms to clarify tasks and ask questions. Here are some that you can look into.

  • Zoom
  • Microsoft Team
  • Asana Task Manager

Incorporate Group Projects and Activities To Build Practical Experience

Projects, case studies, scenarios, and online training examples give virtual interns real-world experience in a supportive online setting.

Schedule Weekly Web Meetings

Weekly web meetings give interns, managers, and coordinators a chance to touch bases. They can discuss the virtual intern’s progress and create a plan to help them improve.

Incentives

Many internships involve some sort of compensation. However, you can further motivate students by adding bonus incentives. They don’t necessarily have to be monetary, but it’s preferred.

Offer Ongoing  Support And Feedback

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is leaving your virtual interns to their own devices. You cannot simply set the ground rules, give them a list of tasks, and then send them on their way. Virtual interns need ongoing online support and feedback so that they can continually improve.
