About the OCE

Our Mission

The mission of Eastern Washington University’s Office of Community Engagement (OCE) is to connect the campus with the broader community through meaningful, reciprocal partnerships that enrich student learning, meet critical community needs, and promote civic responsibility.
We believe community engagement strengthens connections, builds mutual support, and expands opportunities for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the communities we serve.
Through this work, EWU develops leaders by creating transformative experiences that foster professional, social, and cultural engagement, preparing students to be active, informed citizens.

Our Vision

We envision a future for EWU where campus and community are inseparable partners in learning, service, and civic responsibility, cultivating empowered students and thriving communities through sustained collaboration, shared impact, and transformative engagement.

How We Support Applied Learning

The OCE connects classroom lessons to real-world community and regional impact through four primary pathways.

Volunteer & Civic Engagement

Entry-level and ongoing opportunities introduce students to community impact.

Service Learning

Faculty-led, credit-earning experiences provide structured reflection and learning outcomes.

Community-Based Projects

Collaborative projects encourage students to apply discipline-specific skills to community-identified needs.

Field Work & Experiential Learning

Learning takes place in real-world environments, such as schools, clinics, neighborhoods, and regional spaces.

Our Impact

  • We give students meaningful service opportunities both in and beyond the classroom.
  • We support faculty in service-learning, community-based research, and community-engaged scholarship.
  • We build mutually beneficial partnerships that strengthen local, regional, and global communities.
The OCE serves as the gateway for applied learning connected to the community. We help people navigate opportunities, partnerships, and projects that align learning with real-world impact.

Our Key Focus Areas

From mentoring students in local public schools to volunteering at food banks, we strive to make a difference in the communities we serve.
