9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

The Eastern Washington University 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is an annual event held at Roos Field in Cheney to honor the first responders who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Participants climb 110 floors—the height of the Twin Towers—and walk the track to represent the 1.5-mile journey through the Lincoln Tunnel. The event brings the campus and community together in remembrance, reflection, and respect for the service and sacrifice of those who answered the call.

MLK Day of Service

EWU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an annual opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to honor Dr. King’s legacy through meaningful community engagement.

The day begins with a rally and march in downtown Spokane, followed by organized service projects across Spokane County. Together, participants reflect on Dr. King’s commitment to justice and service while making a tangible impact in the community.

Earth Week Week

Earth Week is a campuswide celebration of sustainability, shared responsibility, and community care. Throughout the week, students, faculty, and staff come together to improve campus spaces and promote environmental stewardship.

Volunteer opportunities change yearly but generally include planting, beautifying shared spaces, and participating in campus clean-up efforts. These hands-on activities allow students to create a visible impact while strengthening their connections to their place, community, and one another.

Community Engagement Symposium

The Annual Community Engagement Symposium brings together students, faculty, and community partners to showcase collaborative work happening across our region.

This event highlights applied learning projects, service-learning courses, community-based research, and partnership initiatives developed in collaboration with local organizations and regional college partners. Students present their work, reflect on the impact, and connect with community leaders who help make these experiences possible.

The symposium is a celebration of partnership, civic responsibility, and real-world learning—and a space to spark future collaboration.

Alternative Spring Breaks

Alternative Spring Break gives students an affordable opportunity to travel and engage in meaningful service beyond campus. Through low-cost trips across the region or country, participants partner with community organizations to address real needs while gaining a broader understanding of social, environmental, and economic issues.

These engaging experiences integrate service, reflection, and learning—providing students opportunities to build relationships, broaden their perspectives, and create a lasting impact during spring break.
