Governor Locke Speaks at EWU Commencement Washington

Locke speaking at podiumGovernor Gary Locke spoke to the graduates at Eastern Washington University's Commencement ceremony on June 10, urging them to "be the change you wish to see in the world." For the 1999-2000 academic year, Eastern awarded 1,750 bachelor's degrees and 459 master's degrees.

Here are a few of the comments Locke made about Eastern:

"I am so glad to be at EWU. Talk about 'The University That Could!' When enrollment slumped a few years back, you didn't just shrug your shoulders and turn the other way. You refocused your mission, rededicated yourselves to this beautiful campus here in Cheney and emerged as an unshakable institution with a traditional residential campus, quality professional programs in Spokane and a shining reputation throughout the state."

"Because you here at EWU had faith in your purpose, confidence in your abilities, and a willingness to work hard, your enrollments are higher than they have ever been, your technology programs are an important component in our state's booming high tech industry, your health profession programs are top notch, as is your Honors Program, and you continue to produce excellent teachers for our schoolsƒ"

"There is a vitality and spirit here that is exciting and inspiring."

Eastern Receives Grants Totaling $2 million-plus

The university recently received three grants enabling it to provide training for faculty to integrate electronic technology throughout the curriculum, assist the city of Cheney in revitalization efforts and help train future teachers to use technology effectively in the classroom.

The grants total $2,289,171. The first is a five-year, $1.6 million Title III Grant with the goal of integrating information skills instruction throughout Eastern's curriculum so that the university's graduates, regardless of academic discipline, are consistently proficient in the use of electronic technology as a tool for acquiring and processing information.

The Learn and Serve America Higher Education Grant is a three-year, $103,200 grant funding a Small Town Mainstreet Community Service Learning Project. This will enable Eastern faculty and students to work with Cheney community volunteers to help Cheney with a downtown revitalization and historic preservation project.

The third award is a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology grant of $585,971. The three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education is for a partnership program with Eastern and the Cheney School District, the Healing Lodge of the Seven Nations in Spokane and the Kent School District to help students who are training to become teachers better be able to use and integrate technology in the classroom.
