The Master of Public Health program has specific requirements for admission.Public Health, admission

Applying for Admission

In order to apply for admission to the MPH program, one is required to send to the MPH office

1. A current resume

2. A short career plan essay answering the following questions:

  • What does public health mean to you?
  • What have you done that shows public health service is an important part of your life?
  • Why would you like to pursue or further develop a service career in public, non-profit, or health services administration with a public health emphasis?

3. Three letters of recommendation

4. Proof of a healthcare credential if it is possessed

5. Basic Statistics class or equivalent in current job duties

This material is required in order to complete the Internal MPH Supplemental Application

In addition to the Internal MPH Supplemental Application:

  • one must fill out EWU's graduate application form. For faster processing of one's graduate application form, the graduate department requests prospective students to use the online submission form
  • One may apply online for graduate admission through EagleNET, Eastern Washington University's student services web site using the button below

The EWU Graduate Studies Office collects a $50 application fee. No additional fee is charged for application to the MPH program

    Admission Requirements

    Based on the standards described below:

    • students are admitted upon the recommendation of the director of the MPH program
    • the director's recommendation will be sent to the Dean of Graduate Studies
    • that dean will then notify the student, in writing, of his/her admission or rejection

    Applicants may seek admission on the basis of:

         1. their bachelor's degree work

         2. completion of another master's degree

         3. admission procedures and requirements are the same for the MPH degree and the certificate programs

    Admission Based on Undergraduate Academic Performance

    Students who have completed a bachelor's degree at an appropriately accredited institution may be admitted to the Graduate Program in Public Health based on the following criteria:

    • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 90 quarter graded credits of post-secondary coursework (or its equivalent as computed by the Graduate Studies Office)
    • Must be computer literate to include word processing, spreadsheet construction, and internet applications. The Computer Literacy Program test (CLP) for the university or a computer literacy or computer-intensive course completed as an undergraduate would satisfy this requirement
    • Must have documented, recent statistics or biostatistics course to include basic probability concepts, organizing and summarizing data, sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, simple linear regression and correlation and analysis of variance. Decision Science 245 Data Analysis for Business or an equivalent would fulfill this requirement

      Admission Based on Another Master's Degree

      A student may also be admitted to the MPH program with proof of possession of another valid master's degree.

      Admission Based on Work Experience

      Applicants whose GPA is less than 3.0 and who have at least 10 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in public health may also be offered regular admission

      Admission is based on the following:

      1. Evidence of having obtained a bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution
      2. An essay demonstrating critical thinking skills
      3. A statement of intent demonstrating a level of knowledge and intellectual maturity appropriate to the proposed field of graduate study
      4. Evidence of professional success in Public Health

      English Language Requirement:

      • all students from non-English speaking countries must provide evidence of adequate proficiency in the English language before being admitted to the MPH program
      • this requirement may be satisfied by presenting a TOEFL score of 580 (237 CBT, 92 IBT, or 7.0 IELTS score) or its equivalent
      • a student with a TOEFL score of between 550 and 580 (214-236 CBT, 79-91 IBT, or 6.5 IELTS score) or may be admitted conditionally
      • in such cases, registration for classes is conditional upon having a program of English language study approved by the director in consultation with the International Education office
      • students with TOEFL scores of 525 to 549, (197-213 CBT, 71-78 IBT, or 6.0 IELTS score), may be admitted to the University as post-baccalaureate students in the Graduate Preparation program (Grad Prep). Grad Prep allows students to complete coursework related to their major area of study, along with English support courses taught by our English language Institute (ELI)
      • grad Prep requires a minimum of two quarters of enrollment, before the student can be admitted to the master's program
      • students with TOEFL scores less than mentioned above must complete Level 5 in ELI, then complete Grad Preps
      • post-baccalaureate students they may register for classes and demonstrate their ability to do the work required of MPH students
      • they should be aware of the EWU regulation on "Previous Graduate Credit" which permits no more than 12 pre-admission credits to be counted toward a graduate degree (see the general policies in the front of this catalog)
      • the director of the MPH program will determine whether they should be granted admission to the program based in part upon their work as post-baccalaureate students.
