About 250 people came together at Roos Field on the early morning of Friday, Sept. 11, to honor the first responders who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
Firefighters, police officers, military personnel and community members joined Eastern Washington University students, alumni, and employees on the 25th anniversary of that tragic day for the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.
Hosted by the EWU’s Office of Community Engagement, the event offered attendees two options. Some climbed about 2,200 stairs, traversing the western bleachers of Roos Field to replicate first responders’ ascent up as many as 110 floors of the Twin Towers. Other walked and ran laps around the stadium’s newly renovated track to replicate the New York Port Authority personnel who ran 1.5 miles through the Lincoln Tunnel to reach Ground Zero.
Mark Este, EWU’s director of community engagement, says, “Most of us who were alive in 2001 remember vividly where we were and how we felt when we learned of the terrorist attacks. We don’t want to ever forget those who sacrificed to save others that day, and event is just one small way to keep their memories alive.”
