EWU Film Events & Opportunities

Lights, Camera, Access

At EWU Film, your education extends beyond the classroom.

Thanks to our location near Spokane’s growing film scene—and our strong industry connections—you’ll have access to exciting events, hands-on learning opportunities, and unique experiences throughout the year.

Annual Trip: Universal Studios Hollywood

One of the biggest highlights of the year is our trip to Universal Studios Hollywood, a highly selective, grant-supported learning experience. Students visit EWU alum Jim Orr, President of Distribution at Universal Studios, and spend the day learning from top industry professionals.

Recent experiences include:

  • A private screening of the 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon
  • Conversations with filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Wicked, Wicked: For Good)
  • A Q&A with actor-writer-director-producer Leigh Whannell (Saw, Upgrade, The Invisible Man)

In 2024, students also enjoyed a special screening of The Fall Guy and met director-producer duo David Leitch and Kelly McCormick.

Note that students must apply to participate in this annual trip.

Local Opportunities: Internships and Festivals

EWU’s proximity to Spokane’s thriving media scene means you can gain professional experience, explore various roles, and grow your industry connections.

  • Local Production Work: Access opportunities to work or intern on film, commercial, and media productions happening across the Inland Northwest.
  • Spokane International Film Festival (SpIFF): Get involved in a major film festival right here in the region. Attend screenings and panels, volunteer behind the scenes, or submit your own work for consideration.
  • Festival Submission Support: Ready to screen your film? EWU Film supports student submissions to festivals worldwide through the David Terwische Scholarship.
The Spokane International Film Festival takes place at the Bing Crosby Theater in downtown Spokane.

Student Showcase: The Best of EWU Film

At the end of each academic year, we celebrate student creativity with the Best of EWU Film, a public screening featuring outstanding films from across the program. This showcase highlights the most exceptional work by students and provides an opportunity for you to see your film on the big screen.
