Carlos Castillo-Garsow began his journey as a mathematical biologist before making a change to linguistics. Seeking to combine the two disciplines, he completed a Ph.D. in mathematics education with a focus on how students use mathematics as a language to communicate ideas while modeling. His areas of interest are in the cognitive development of students into mathematical modelers, and strategies for effective mentoring of student research projects in applied mathematics.
