Getting Started

EWU in the High School is a program that allows you to take classes already offered at your high school and receive college credit. It’s different from AP classes because there is no test to receive the college credit and, if you’re a public school student, you don’t have to pay for the college credit. Running Start takes place on the college campus or online and is taught by college or university professors that are employed by the college or university. Both options are actual college courses and will have grades transcribed on an official college/university transcript. The credits transfer the same as traditional college credits.

EWU in the HS students get college/university credit without having to take a specific exam.

Yes. Students can earn credit with a D or 0.7. However, we encourage students who are earning less than a C (2.0) to drop the course so that they don’t risk academic probation when they enter a college/university full-time.

When a student drops the course because of a lower grade, their grade won’t go on their college transcript, but it can still go on their high school transcript and count toward high school graduation.

As many as fit in their schedule and allow them to graduate from high school on time! There may also be state funding limitations depending on the high school.

Students should start the drop/withdrawal paperwork with their teacher as soon as they realize they need to drop a course. Students can’t be dropped after the last official day of the course or after grades have been submitted. See registration dates and deadlines.

Yes! The EWU in the HS credits are official college credits and will appear on an official EWU transcript. EWU credits are highly transferable. However, every college has their own policy regarding the way credits from other colleges are received and applied. That means credits earned as part of a College in the High School program might not transfer to every institution or might not be applied to a degree the same way at every institution. You can learn more about credit transfers by:

  • Checking with the receiving institution to see how they will apply EWU credit
  • Checking our transfer guide to see how your credits might transfer to other colleges
