On the morning of Friday, Sept. 11, Eastern Washington University will host its annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb to honor those who risked or lost their lives during the 2001 terror attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
The event will start at 8:30 a.m. at Roos Field, with two options for participants wishing to commemorate the attacks’ 25th anniversary. Attendees can climb the 2,200 stairs bordering the stadium’s west bleachers to replicate New York City firefighters’ heroic ascent up as many as 110 floors of the Twin Towers. They also can run or walk six laps on the stadium’s newly renovated track to replicate the New York Port Authority first responders who ran 1.5-miles through the Lincoln Tunnel to reach Ground Zero.
The climb, which originated in Dressler Hall and was halted due to COVID-19 restrictions, was relocated to Roos Field last year – thanks, in large part, to the leadership of student-turned-alumna, Denise Quiroga.
Today, the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is organized and hosted by EWU’s Office of Community Engagement.
Last year’s event at Roos drew more than 100 people, including police officers, firefighters and military personnel. Mark Este, director of EWU’s Office of Community Engagement, says he’s hopeful this year’s event draws an even larger crowd.
“Most of us who were alive in 2001 remember vividly where we were and how we felt when we learned of the terrorist attacks,” Este says. “We don’t want to ever forget those who sacrificed to save others that day, and this event is just one small way to keep their memories alive.”
The event is free to attend, and those who wish to participate can register online, though registration isn’t required to participate. Free parking is available in Lot P12 (located above and west of the football stadium), with entrance at the main gates to Roos Field. Snacks and beverages will be available.
